Idris Elba says the hugely-anticipated Luther film adaptation is finally happening after he accepted the Special Award at the virtual BAFTA TV Awards last night (31 July).

The 47-year-old actor stars as iconic detective John Luther in BBC one's much-loved psychological crime drama, which was recently revived for a fifth series for a week-long TV event in January 2019.

Idris Elba has once again insisted that a movie version of Luther is going to happen at some point in the future. Elba said as much to various press outlets, including Digital Spy, after he accepted the Special Award at this year’s Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards.

After his BAFTA win, which celebrated his acclaimed career to date, Elba revealed what's next for him to press backstage at the event.

"I've maintained that I'd like to see [Luther] come to a film," he told reporters (via Digital Spy). "That's what I think we're headed towards, is a film. I'm looking forward to making that happen."

He added: "It is happening!"

The star also explained how a movie version of the series will enable him to explore new ground with his character which he has played on the small screen for a decade.

"With a film, the sky is the limit," he said. "Obviously, you can be a little bit more bold in the storylines, maybe international, a little bit sort of up the scale. But John Luther is always going to be John Luther."

Idris recently said that the film was close to being confirmed earlier this year as he promoted his Sky comedy In the Long Run, telling press (via Sky News): "There isn't a real formal plan for Luther at the moment.

"I've made it very clear that I'd like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther."

Meanwhile, Elba was awarded his prestigious gong last night after an introduction from Luther co-star Ruth Wilson and No Good Deed's Taraji P Henson.

Upon accepting his BAFTA, he joked: "Thank you, first of all thank you BAFTA for giving me this opportunity and finally recognising [me]... I'm joking, I'm very proud!"
