Jurassic Park almost ended up as a franchise relegated to the world of perpetual nostalgia, trotted out only for Halloween costumes or flashback lists. It would be a whole 12 years before the first delayed sequel – Jurassic World – began development.

Jurassic Park's director Steven Spielberg had tried many times to get a reboot off the ground, and it was in 2015 that Jurassic World was released, and to a positive reception by critics and fans. In fact, it was so well received it begot another: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Spielberg confirmed Jurassic World 3 (or Jurassic Park 6, depending on your view of the franchise) would be directed by Colin Trevorrow, who also directed 2015's Jurassic World. The third film, Jurassic World Dominion, was confirmed in February 2020.

Here's what we know so far about the upcoming movie.

Jurassic World 3 release date: When is Jurassic World Dominion out in cinemas?

Cinemas across the world will be welcoming dinosaurs again on their screens on June 11, 2021. So far, the release date has not been postponed but production has halted due to the ongoing world situation.

If it were to be delayed, it would likely be pushed back a full year to stay in keeping with June release dates that have proven effective for the previous two movies.

Still, production did start again in July 2020, becoming the first blockbuster to start shooting again in the UK, so there is hope it'll hit that original release date.

A senior production executive at Universal told Deadline, "We want to make sure that we are going above and beyond the national protocols to create a safe environment."

"Cost isn't our main concern now: it's safety. We will take direction from our medical team, but we're confident that with the staggered scheduling and zones of talent and crew, along with a system of contact tracing, we can move forward with limited delay in production."

And the cast is certainly feeling protected.

"There has been a lot of communication," Bryce Dallas Howard – who plays Claire Dearing in the series – explained. "They are going above and beyond. We would never be going back to work if we didn't feel safe.

"And, you know, we're taking it one day at a time and I'm very grateful to have a job" (via Deadline). Revealing "daily" communication and conversations between "all of the actors and key crew members", Bryce gave credit to the production for ensuring the safety of its cast and crew.

"What feels really right about it is that there is this daily conversation, daily communication with all of the actors, all of the key crew members and just us consistently being like, 'Okay, how are we going to do this? How are we going to do this safely?'

"[We're] not making compromises that could undermine someone's health," she added.

Emily Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising), a newcomer to the dinosaur franchise, will pen the screenplay for Jurassic World 3. The movie has been described by Trevorrow as a "celebration of everything that has existed in the franchise up until now".

Dallas Howard has enjoyed what she's read - as has her husband.

"The script was awesome, it was so exhilarating reading it – my husband got to read it too, Colin was like, 'Yeah, you and Seth can read it,' and we were like, just the whole time, kinda flipping out," explained Bryce.

OG Jurassic Park veteran Sam Neill is certainly exhilarated.

"We'll be breaking new ground, in fact. We're, I think, the first big film to get back into production, and it's going to be very interesting to see the process. I'm very excited about it, its going to be a terrific film," Neill told This Morning.

The actor took to Twitter to spread the word even further.

"Hold onto your hat," Neill wrote. "Gettin' my old one back on this week, and facing off dinosaurs once again. Best yet.

"Excited and terrified - these things will kill ya."

Jurassic World 3 cast: Who from Jurassic Park will be in Jurassic World Dominion?

Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be seen once more as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing respectively, as confirmed by Colin Trevorrow. He has stated that there are other characters from Fallen Kingdom who will become "major characters".

Colin Trevorrow had to persuade Steven Spielberg to rename 'Jurassic Park' franchise ‘Jurassic World’ Colin Trevorrow had to convince Steven Spielberg to rename the Jurassic Park franchise to Jurassic World when he was hired to oversee the 2015 blockbuster. Trevorrow, who oversaw the monstrously successful Jurassic World back in 2015, admitted as much during Collider’s Directors On Directing discussion for Comic-Con@Home. It was called Jurassic Park and, if you can imagine, at the time they were pretty married to that.

Newcomer to the franchise Isabella Sermon might also return as Maisie Lockwood, the genetically-created offspring of John Hammond's former partner Sir Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell).

And to complete this trilogy, morally dubious geneticist Dr Henry Wu (BD Wong) might finally get his comeuppance. Though he wasn't in the sequel, Jake Johnson could reprise his much-loved Jurassic World role as Lowery in the threequel.

Trevorrow said: "It doesn't mean he'll never be back, and I've had conversations with almost all of the actors going back to the previous films about how important their legacies are to these movies, and yet also how important it is to continuously change and evolve them into something new."

Though Jeff Goldblum returned to the franchise as Dr Ian Malcolm, he only had limited screen time in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. But fret not, fans of the original – the THREE remaining original stars are confirmed to be reprising their roles!

Director Colin Trevorrow revealed why he staggered their return. "We'd brought back Dr Henry Wu first because he was the man behind the science and the only one who made sense. Otherwise, we'd have had to come up with a reason why Ellie, Malcolm, and Grant all went to the theme park on the exact same day it broke down – again," Trevorrow said.

"But the next film allows the legacy characters to be a part of the story in an organic way. [Jurassic World Dominion screenwriter] Emily Carmichael and I call it Jurassic Park VI, because it is."

Disney releases never-before-seen sitcom episode that went straight to the poison closet in 2018

Disney releases never-before-seen sitcom episode that went straight to the poison closet in 2018 © ABC Disney releases never-before-seen sitcom episode that went straight to the poison closet in 2018 In recent years it has had the hit Sitcom " Black-ish ", which is broadcast in the US on the Disney broadcaster ABC, not only has six seasons with 142 episodes, the series has also received numerous nominations and awards (including a Golden Globe) . But of the 142 episodes so far - unsurprisingly - the most infamous is the one that has never been broadcast before.

Chris Pratt recently teased that everyone would be returning, but there is still no official word on reprisals from Ariana Richards (Jurassic Park), Vince Vaughn, Julianne Moore (Lost World), William H. Macy, Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park III), or Lauren Lapkus (Jurassic World).

As for the film’s villain, there’s a returning classic character who could be fulfilling that role - Campbell Scott, aka Lewis Dodgson, aka the dodgy man in shades who handed Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) that fake can of shaving cream to store dinosaur embryos.

Dodgson was a bit of an unresolved plot point in the first movie, so we’re glad he’ll be coming back. Let’s hope he brings his black market super-spy shenanigans back with him, maybe with an empty Kinder Surprise packet to hide a dinosaur egg in or something.

Jurassic World 3 plot: What will happen in Jurassic World Dominion?

We don't know too much about how the threequel will continue from Fallen Kingdom's cliffhanger that saw dinosaurs out in the world.

Trevorrow has been calling it a "science thriller" and Howard has been talking about how the movie will "bring the entire saga together", especially as it's been reported that it's the final movie in the Jurassic World series.

But one thing that the third movie won't be is a dino-vs-human war movie. "Dinosaurs can't organise," Trevorrow told Jurassic Outpost.

"Right now we've got lethal predators in wild areas surrounding cities all over the world, [but] they don't go pack hunting for humans in urban areas. The world I get excited about is the one where it's possible that a dinosaur might run out in front of your car on a foggy backroad, or invade your campground looking for food."

Chris Pratt has promised fans that they "will not be disappointed" and teased that the movie could start after a time jump.

Jake Johnson's 'Jurassic World: Dominion' return in doubt

Jake Johnson's 'Jurassic World: Dominion' return in doubt Jake Johnson and director Colin Trevorrow are “trying to figure out” how his character Lowery Cruthers can return in Jurassic World: Dominion. The New Girl star’s turn as park employee Lowery was the funniest part of the original Jurassic World. So much so that, when it was time to make a sequel to the smash-hit blockbuster, Tom Cruise had already signed up Johnson to be the comedic relief in The Mummy. Johnson didn’t have the same scheduling conflict this time around, though, and he recently told Collider that he was planning to fly out to London to shoot Jurassic World: Dominion when the global pandemic hit.

"I can't believe that we're going to make that movie, and I can't believe they found a way to deliver on the promise of the end of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," he explained.

"Like, 'Wait what? The island has blown up. The animals are out, we can't put them back in the box. What are we going to do? How are not only these dinosaurs but this technology moving forward going to affect the planet?' We jump forward, and it's like, 'Oh! Oh, right! Oh, damn'. It’s going to be pretty epic."

How will the original trio will fit into the plot? Trevorrow knows what he won't do: make them into "caricatures or parodies of themselves".

He added: "They're so iconic, you can easily fall into that trap. You start by asking the most basic questions: who are these people now? What do they make of the new world they're living in, and how do they feel about being part of its history? Ultimately it will be in collaboration with the actors. They know and love these characters. We'll do it together."

Jurassic World 3 trailer: When is the Jurassic World Dominion trailer out online?

If Dominion follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, then we won't get our first glimpse until December 2020, with a second trailer rolling out in April 2021.

Filming has already begun on Jurassic World Dominion. Goldblum revealed that he would start filming "come this summer." He added: "[I'll] be here shooting with Laura Dern and Sam O'Neill and Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Colin Trevorrow as the great director is going to be writing and directing it. And I can't wait."

We can only hope it will feature the brand new baby nasutoceratops!

Jurassic World: Dominion is out in UK cinemas on June 11, 2021.
