Entertainment Margot Robbie says kissing Jared Leto's the Joker in Suicide Squad was 'so messy'
Suicide Squad: The Joker's motivations for chaos revealed in much-awaited DC movie
Most DC Comics fans know what to expect of eagerly-anticipated movie Suicide Squad by now, what with numerous trailers having landed since July last year. A group of iconic baddies are forced to band together in order to carry out dangerous black ops missions on behalf of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller. One thing that's remained somewhat of a mystery however is the exact role Jared Leto's The Joker will play in the film that is until now. Not that The Joker ever really needs a sound motive for any of the psychotic chaos he creates – 'some men just want to watch the world burn' after all – but a recent report from Entertainment Weekly claims that the Crown Prince Of Crime will find himself up against the 'Worst Heroes Ever' in his pursuit to reunite with former accomplice and girlfriend, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. The publication also goes on to say that the super villain will enact "a laser-like plan" to find his "true love". In the original comics, Joker and Harley are one of DC's most well known couples, with various issues over the years detailing their somewhat volatile relationship. Throughout, Joker has often only kept Harley around simply to help him carry out his various crime-filled plans, because she entertains him from time-to-time and more darkly, for someone instantly available to him to be abusive to.
Suicide Squad's New York premiere was a star-studded event, where Margot Robbie who plays Harley Quinn and the Joker played by Jared Leto grabbed the limelight. Despite the early negative reviews, Robbie and Leto's characters looked like complete entertainers in the numerous clips released by DC.
Having portrayed an abusive relationship on-screen with the Joker, the Australian actress went on to spill details of the kissing scenes at the Monday premiere.
According to People magazine, Robbie said that filming intimate scenes with her co-star Leto in all his make-up and costume was a scary experience. In fact, with both the actors covered in make-up, the report claimed that kissing scenes took a "little bit of extra work".
Suicide Squad: Comic-Con figure hints The Joker will have his own Batman suit in movie
Judging by the trailers, posters and toys released by Warner Bros and DC Entertainment ahead of upcoming comic-book movie adaption Suicide Squad, it's safe to say that Jared Leto's Joker will go through his fair share of looks. So far we've seen him rocking a crisp white shirt, a purple crocodile skin trench coat and a pair of Arkham Asylum blue jogging bottoms but now, San Diego Comic-Con has revealed another rather unexpected outfit he might don in the movie: his own take on Batman's suit. Spotted at the Sideshow Collectibles booth at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday (20 July), the Hot Toys action figure was standing next to Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and a label that read "The Joker (Batman Imposter Version)". The toy shows the gold-grilled villain wearing a purple and green version of Bruce Wayne's cloaked suit, complete with plenty of spray-painted "ha has" and The Joker symbols on the boots. While it's not necessarily confirmed that we'll see The Joker dressed in the Dark Knight get-up in the soon-to-be-released film, Hot Toys is well-known for creating merchandise that is almost an exact replica of its on screen counterpart. Similarly, it's not common practice for the company to veer into creating "alternate" designs that aren't based on actual elements from the movies, so it seems more than likely this version of the crazed baddie will show up at some point.
"It is so messy," Robbie told the magazine at the film's world premiere in NYC. "I've done kissing scenes where I have lipstick on and that's a nightmare but to have two of you having the lipstick on, it's terror," she added.
In Suicide Squad, the 26-year-old actress plays the psychotic doctor Harley Quinn, who's also a supervillain and a member of the Task Force X. DC Comics' history teases that Harley Quinn was a psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum, where she met the Joker. Ever since the encounter, the doctor fell prey to her patient's mind games and is later seen as the lover and accomplice of the crooked clown prince of crime.
Previously, reports stated that Leto had used "method acting" to ace his role as the psychotic adversary. Considering such a perfectionist portraying one of the most-feared DC villain, it would have been no easy task for the Harley Quinn actress to film kissing scenes. However, Robbie insisted that she was not afraid to kiss the Joker despite his intimidating appearance on-screen.
"Once you get over the initial shock of meeting Mr. J, you kind of become desensitized to it I guess so it seemed normal after awhile," she said.
Robbie and Leto starring Suicide Squad will hit theatres this Friday (5 August).
