Carole Baskin has been ruled out of appearing in I'm a Celebrity this year - despite being an early favourite.

The animal activist, who starred in Netflix's Tiger King, was tipped to appear on the upcoming series.

It would have seen her stay at Gwrych Castle in Abergele - the new location of the ITV reality programme.

The appearance would have marked her biggest TV gig since Tiger King debuted on Netflix earlier this year.

In the docuseries, viewers were introduced to Carole as the subject of a plot to kill by rival Joe Exotic.

Carole - CEO of Big Cat Rescue in Florida - became a household name after the show's debut in March.

And according to the Sun, ITV bosses were said to have been keen to capitalise on Tiger King's success.

The controversial TV star had reportedly been offered "a big money deal" to appear on I'm a Celebrity.

The 59-year-old has however signed up for a different project this autumn.

It was announced yesterday (August 2) that Carole will compete on ABC's Dancing with the Stars.

The show - the US version of Strictly Come Dancing - will premiere it's next season on September 14.

Carole said she "really hopes" she can change the public's opinion of her during her time on the show.

The animal activist's appearance however now poses a scheduling conflict with I'm a Celebrity.

Dancing with the Stars is expected to conclude in late November - clashing with the ITV reality series.

There's still a possibility she could appear - if she leaves the US show early enough - but it's unlikely.

Carole herself hopes to stay in the competition as long as possible as "it'll keep the cats forefront."

UK fans responded to the news on social media overnight, with many expressing disappointment.

The Big Cat Rescue CEO's preference for another TV show however should come as no surprise.

In an exclusive interview with the Mirror last month, Carole shared her thoughts on I'm a Celebrity.

The 59-year-old explained that she "strives towards veganism" and is a supporter of "the plant world."

She described the potential eating bushtucker trials - simply for "entertaining television" - as "gross."

Carole also questioned whether an appearance would conflict with her support of animal rights.

The Tiger King star said "no amount of money" would encourage her to "disrespect nature" in any way.

Her comments come following criticism of the show by animal activist groups in recent years.

This includes TV presenter Chris Packham who has been a vocal critic of bushtucker trials.

The wildlife expert notably questioned the "exploiting animals for entertainment" in such challenges.

And whilst animals are expected to play a role moving forward, ITV has addressed some of the criticism.

It introduced a new policy as a result of the backlash - which came into effect during the last series.

TV bosses at the time confirmed that contestants would no longer be tasked with eating live creatures.

The celebrities were instead challenged to hold live bugs in their mouths - though these weren't eaten.

I'm a Celebrity will broadcast live from Gwrych Castle later this year on ITV.
