The MCU movie will explore Natasha's history as we see her on the run following the events of 2016's Captain America: Civil War and coming to terms with her troubled past as she reunites with her Russian 'family'.

The film's director Cate Shortland has revealed to Total Film that it was Marvel boss Kevin Feige who decided to make Black Widow's solo movie a 'family' drama and she admitted that she didn't understand the choice at first.

"That decision] was puzzling to me," she said. "And then I realised, by the end, that Kevin and I had similar visions. What I really wanted to do was to expose the character and get under her skin. The family created the dynamic with which that would happen.

"We see a different side of the character, because she's in scenes with people that know her from when she was a child. She's not a superhero in those scenes; she's a daughter or a sister."

Black Widow will see Natasha reunite with three figures from her past – Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (Stranger Things star David Harbour).

They will find themselves dealing with a dangerous foe in the form of Taskmaster, a masked villain who has the ability to imitate his opponents' fighting styles and who has connections to the Red Room where Natasha was trained.

Total Film has also shared a sneak peek at the movie in the form of three new photos posted to Instagram.

They show Natasha and Yelena looking at something in the distance in shock, Taskmaster rolling through the streets in a tank and Yelena running from an explosion.

Black Widow's solo movie follows the character's tragic death in Avengers: Endgame, in which she sacrificed herself on the planet Vormir to enable Hawkeye / Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) to retrieve the Soul Stone the Avengers needed to try and stop Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Johansson has told Total Film that she feels Natasha's sacrifice was an active choice for the character, saying that she "has known that's her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way".

Black Widow has an October 28 release date in the UK and November 6 in the US.
