Star Wars might have shown Darth Vader's redemption in the original trilogy as being inspired by saving his son – but it seems there was more to it than that.
In the latest issue of Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco's ongoing Darth Vader comic book series, Vader finally tracks down the place where Padmé Amidala died in his quest to find out who hid Luke Skywalker from him.
Royal news: Congratulations are in order for the Queen's granddaughter Princess Eugenie, who is expecting her first child with husband Jack Brooksbank

However, Vader doesn't find the answers he's looking for on Polis Massa and instead has an unexpected reaction that sets the stage for his eventual redemption in Return of the Jedi.

The fifth issue picks up with Vader at Padmé's tomb, where data droid Zed Six Seven discovers a med implant with coordinates to Polis Massa.
Instead of stopping the Amidalans tracking them, Vader tells Padmé's handmaiden Sabé to get them all to meet him there but, as Admiral Ackbar would know, it's a trap. Vader still blames the Amidalans for hiding Luke, even if they didn't directly do it.
Vader gets them to meet him at Polis Massa because he wants to "make an end to this all" and when they arrive, Vader destroys all of their ships and it's assumed he kills Sabé, Ric Olie and the rest of Padmé's handmaidens.
Find out how Princess Eugenie's happy baby news will affect her uncle Prince Edward and his children

With them out of the way, Vader makes his way to the maternity ward on Polis Massa where Padmé died. All of the data has been destroyed, except for a recording of Padmé's final moments on a midwifery droid.
"There's good in him. I know. I know there's still...," Vader sees Padmé say as she dies, with the scene taken directly from Revenge of the Sith.
The fact that she still thought he could be saved, even after seeing Anakin at his very worst on Mustafar, sends Vader into a spiral of remembering who he was – back when he was just Anakin Skywalker.
It's a hint to his eventual redemption in Return of the Jedi and a sign it wasn't just Luke's impending death at the hands of Palpatine that caused him to turn back to the Light Side.
But wait, we hear you say. Vader was still a bit evil in Return of the Jedi, which takes place after this current comic book series. Well, the answer to that comes in the final moments of the latest issue.

After watching the recording, Vader returns to Palpatine on Coruscant and the Emperor realises something has changed in his apprentice.
"The Sith know that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to strength. But you, my friend, have just wallowed in grief. You need to start all over again with fear," Palpatine tells him, before zapping him as the issue ends on a cliffhanger.
With the Padmé story completed, we know that future issues of this Darth Vader run will tie in with The Rise of Skywalker.
"Vader is going to suffer a terrible punishment and undertake a new journey-slash-quest, and there are key elements that will tie into Episode IX in a huge way," writer Greg Pak teased at Comic-Con@Home's Lucasfilm Publishing panel.
"There are some doors that have been thrown wide open, which dig into some great unexplored territory and also dig deeply into the heart of Vader. Once again, I can't believe they're letting us do it."
Pregnant Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's baby will reside with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at Kensington Palace, living in neighbouring Ivy Cottage
