Dumfriesshire’s legendary comic book writer of more than 40 years, Alan Grant, has scored another success.
Alan, who lives in Moniaive, and fellow Scottish comic writers John Wagner of Judge Dredd and A History of Violence fame, are the creators of Rok of the Reds – which was recently shortlisted for Teenage Book of the Year 2020 by the Scottish Book Trust.
Illustrated by 2000AD favourite Dan Cornwell, Rok of the Reds tells the story of an alien lord seeking refuge on Earth who falls in love with “the beautiful game”.
LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy talks about the future of Star Wars
"We just need the time to step back and really absorb what George [Lucas] has created"LucasFilm, who produce the Star Wars movies, is using this time to reevaluate what works and what does not, with Kathleen Kennedy carefully planning the series' next steps. Speaking with the Wrap, she said: "[The] stories have been told within this universe over the last 40-odd years, and there’s now the realization that this is a mythology that actually spans about 25,000 years, when you really start to look at all the different stories that have been told, whether it’s in books and games.
And now their comic strip football team have landed a big sponsorship deal for Rok’s second season as the world’s first alien footballer.
In Rok the God – which has gone on sale this week – Rok’s team of Radford Reds will be proudly bearing their new Laser Tools logo.
Midlands-based company Laser Tools, sponsors of the BTCC motor racing team Laser Tools Racing, agreed to add football to their portfolio with a striking difference – the team they are sponsoring only appears in Alan and John’s critically-acclaimed graphic novel series.
John said: “It’s a perfect brand for the team and looks just right on the shirts. And, of course, we’re immensely grateful for a sponsor’s support.
“Producing comic strips is expensive.
“It is heartening that a company like Laser Tools has seen enough value in what we’re doing to get behind us.”
Game of Thrones showrunners on why they didn't include major book character, Lady Stoneheart
George R.R. Martin still believes Lady Stoneheart should have made the final cutDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss have previously discussed the decision, but never in quite this much detail. For a new behind-the-scenes book, Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, the showrunners revealed why they decided not to include Lady Stoneheart, and it has a lot to do with Martin's still-secret plans for the character.
He and Laser Tools founder, Martin Smith, were at school together in Greenock but had not seen each other for more than 50 years until they were reunited at a comic convention.
Martin said he listened to John talk about the project and offered to back it: “We are very interested in brand awareness and are always keen to promote the Laser Tools brand in new, fun and exciting ways.
“Sponsoring the Radford Reds is a great fit for us, and it brings our brand to a whole new audience.
“Here at Laser Tools we have a lot of comic and graphic novel enthusiasts.”
The full-colour 120-pages Rok the God, published by RedRok Comics, is now available exclusively from rokofthereds.com.
It follows Alan’s doorstep adventure earlier this year when he joined forces with fellow villagers during lockdown to produce the hugely popular Moniaive Fights Back comic which is raising funds for Revitalise Moniaive.
Worldwide favourite comic book characters like Batman and Judge Dredd in 2000AD are among Alan’s well-known works in a career which also includes the likes of Lobo, Shadow of the Bat, The War of 1812 and Judge Anderson, among others.
Alan has worked for publishers at home and abroad, including DC Comics and Marvel.
