BARBARA Knox is one of Coronation Street ' s most-beloved characters - and her latest dramatic storyline is set to be the most heartbreaking of all. The actress has played Rita Tanner on the ITV soap for decades, but as her memory deteriorates, her future doesn't look quite so rosy or does it?

Sally, who plays Abi Franklin on the ITV soap, revealed that the moment it hit her that she was on Corrie was meeting the legendary actress who plays Rita Sullivan on the soap.

"I was expecting it, but the intensity of it nearly knocked me off my feet. It was meeting Barbara Knox. I got to tell her she was the reason I became an actress," she told The Mirror.

"Honestly, I very nearly curtsied outside her dressing room. I got really emotional, and she was kind and gave me loads of good advice."

She explained: "She told me to keep good company, always appreciate what you've got, and that we're very lucky to be doing this.

"Corrie has always been on the telly in my house, so to walk through those doors of The Rovers and for this to be the way I earn a living, well, it's brilliantly surreal."

Barbara Knox MBE (born Barbara Brothwood, 30th September, 1933 in Oldham) is a British actress best known for her role on Coronation Street as singer-turned-newsagent Rita Tanner. Her Street debut was a solitary appearance on 2nd December 1964

Abi has really had a tough time of things on the Cobbles lately - and it's only set to continue as her storylines will have a huge impact right through to the end of the year, with producer Iain MacLeod revealing some hints about what to expect.

"I've really been enjoying watching the Abi/Kevin love story and there's going to be a fairly bumpy road for them, I think it's fair to say, across the remaining part of the year.

"It will involve Debbie Webster, who at first seems to be relatively sympathetic to Abi, but their relationship disintegrates to the point where 'epic feud' would certainly not be an understatement!"
