You know you’re a Great British Bake Off fan when the mere mention of a custard tart induces a cold sweat. Bakers and viewers alike were full of anxiety during Pie & Tart Week , which also had a few soggy bottoms (and one soggy top!) thrown into the mix… It was full on Tartageddon… and not even

Move over Strictly Come Dancing, there’s a new curse on the scene – and it’s hitting one of the most beloved shows on television.

The sugary-sweet Great British Bake Off may be one of the most heart-warming shows on the box in this increasingly gloomy world, but week four is where the cake-based competition takes a turn to the dark side.

The bakers who comes out on top during this stage of the competition are inflicted with the "Bake Off curse" – that is, whoever wins Star Baker in Week 4 has never gone on to win the entire competition.

Don’t believe us? Well, the proof is in the pudding.

Ever since the Star Baker title was introduced into The Great British Bake Off format for its second series in 2011, week four has been statistically marked as the unluckiest week for whoever lands the accolade.

Often (but not always), week four starts to separate the wheat from the chaff, introducing more fiddly themes for the bakers to master.

Over the last ten series, week four has challenged the competitors with a unique specialism – with season four looking at 'pies and tarts', season six 'batter', season seven'caramel' and season ten 'dairy'.

Matt Lucas' Great British Bake Off Debut Was Deliciously Silly

Matt Lucas' Great British Bake Off Debut Was Deliciously Silly The Great British Bake Off finally returned to our screens on Tuesday night, and there was a new face in that famous tent. Matt Lucas has joined Noel Fielding on the Bake Off presenting team following Sandi Toksvig’s departure - and needless to say, there were japes a plenty from the Little Britain star. As well as mocking Boris Johnson before the show had even properly started, Matt delivered plenty of memorable gags that went down a (sweet) treat with viewers. Here are some of the highlights…On fluffing his debutAs Matt and co-host Noel went to kick off the signature challenge, he shouted “Bake!” at the wrong time – first too early, and then too late.

Find out what happened each week in Bake Off series nine as Paul Hollywood, Prue Leith, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig search for - and crown - a new GBBO champion.

This year’s line-up for the Great British Bake Off boasts puff pastry wizards and bread-making air stewards. 'I try to bake alternate days. If it is something big, I develop and design it over the week and then execute it over the weekend. I am a very messy baker and viewers will see that !

This could explain why whoever wins Star Baker in week four may fail to take the top crown. Take season six's 'batter' theme – this is a far more specialist and niche technique to master than cake week, suggesting that a Week Four winner is less likely to be an all-rounder. Season 11 is set to follow in its footsteps with week four being dedicated to chocolate-themed bakes.

But that’s not to say those who excel in these more unique Bake Off themes are one-trick ponies. On four out of ten series, the week-four theme has been 'Desserts' – a varied theme which has seen bakers try their hand at a spread of bakes, including crème brûlée, torte cake and meringue roulade.

And over the previous ten years, some of the show’s most beloved bakers have taken the week-four Star Baker prize and stormed to the final, including season four’s Kimberley, series five’s Richard (known for his perpetual pencil behind the ear) and last year’s sweetheart Steph. However, none of these bakers were crowned the nation’s best amateur baker.

It is Pastry Week , and with just eight bakers left, Mary and Paul are looking for perfection. For the signature challenge it is breakfast time, Danish style. In the technical challenge, Mary asks the bakers to keep their cool, giving them limited time and instructions to bake a classic British tart.

If you want to make it as far as the final, our bakers' best bet is to rise to the challenge on Biscuit Week – with 78% of all the finalists between season two and season ten having won star baker for their biscuits.

Lipstick-loving Candice Brown, who won Star Baker for her biscuits in season seven, also ended up taking the whole competition.

If we look at the series currently airing on screen, this sets Dave, who was a firm favourite on Biscuit Week, in good stead for the 2020 final.

Those who perform well in pastry week are also likely to see themselves take to the final, with 57.1% of all star bakers of pastry week making their way to the top three.

But sometimes there are anomalies which can well and truly buck all statistical trends – look at series ten winner David Atherton. The health advisor and nurse took the top prize after excelling in the show’s final; making him the first contestant to win the show without ever having won Star Baker.

And with 2020 being quite possibly one of the weirdest years on record, anything could happen in the tent of dreams…
