Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch apparently improvised a key moment in last year's Avengers: Endgame.

This is according to Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who retweeted a GIF on Twitter yesterday (October 27) featuring the Sorcerer Supreme holding his finger up.

Derrickson simply captioned his post: "Benedict told me this moment was an improv."

In the movie itself, this happens during the battle scene where Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man looks to Strange and realises that the "one way" to beat Thanos is to steal the Infinity Stones and use them – killing himself in the process.

The filmmaker's followers were quick to share comments on this revelation, with one writing: "you can tell him it might be the most emotionally charged single finger in cinematic history, his and ET's."

"As if we needed any more proof that Benedict was a Grade A actor," added someone else.

Before Cumberbatch officially signed on the dotted line, did you know that the likes of Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Ryan Gosling, Joaquin Phoenix, Matthew McConaughey, Colin Farrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all considered to play Strange?

In the end, Leto and Gyllenhaal joined different Marvel projects: Morbius and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
