Netflix's decision to cancel I Am Not Okay With This after just one season came as a shock to both fans and its showrunner Jonathan Entwistle – so much so, the series boss even asked the streaming service if they could re-do the season one finale.

Netflix, however, declined.

The TV series, based on Charles Forsman's comic book of the same name, was cancelled back in August, despite setting itself up for a second season.

"We were shocked when it happened, because I was like, 'What a weird show to cancel,'" Entwistle has now admitted.

In a move away from the comic book, the Netflix series ended with Syd Novak (Sophia Lillis) being approached by a shadowy figure who had been following her throughout the first season.

"Who are you? Should I be afraid," she asks the figure, who replies: "They should be afraid. Let's begin", dialogue that Entwistle told Insider was a deliberate "hook...into season two".

"That was something that had been, you know, not forced upon us in the writing, but definitely something we were made very acutely aware of," he explained. "Me and Christy [Hall] wrote that scene pretty much on location in Pittsburgh."

Netflix's announcement that it would be axing I Am Not Okay With This felt particularly unfortunate, as the streaming service had previously renewed it for a second season.
