His Dark Materials is made in Wales by Bad Wolf Studios and HBO and debuted in November 2019, pulling in 9.7million viewers for its debut episode.

Where is His Dark Materials filmed?

Series one had some cracking Welsh locations including Blaenavon which doubled for Trollesund, the main port where Lyra first meets Lee Scoresby and Iorek.

Scenes were also filmed in Plasturton Gardens in Cardiff as well as at Wolf Studios in Cardiff Bay.

Oxford also plays a huge part in series one, too. We wrote in more detail about these locations, here.

As for series two, more of the same we know so far, but keep an eye out for updated locations.

What happened at the end of series one?

Series one followed orphan Lyra's journey as she ran away from Jordan College in Oxford to take up a new life with mysterious Mrs Coulter, with an aim to finding her pal Roger.

But as the series went on it was evident that Mrs Coulter did not have Lyra's best interests at heart, forcing Lyra to escape to head north, where she meets up with Texan aeronaut Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, a disgraced armoured bear.

The trio (and their daemons) venture north where eventually Lyra is almost separated from her daemon Pan and reunited with Roger.

But, in the final episode Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) separates Roger from his daemon, killing him but causing an explosion that creates the bridge to the Multiverse - a system of different worlds, in one of which Will resides.

That is until he finds the door to the other worlds.

Bring on series two!

What is a daemon?

In Lyra's universe all humans have animal companions called daemons, which are manifestations of the human soul.
