George Michael’s top 10 songs
33 years ago, George Michael went from one half of Wham! to a solo star, with the release of his first solo album, ‘Faith’. On October 30, 1987, ‘Faith’ was released and went straight to number one, stayed there for 12 weeks and shot out six more singles, four of which reached number one. By the end of the year, Michael was one of the biggest stars on the planet. To celebrate George’s genius lets count down his top 10 songs as a solo artist. Careless Whisper This was the song that made p

Careless Whisper
This was the song that made people stand up and take notice of George as a credible artist outside the pop fun of Wham!. ‘Careless Whisper’ was co-written with Andrew Ridgeley when they were just teenagers and released under the Wham! banner. George later explained the meaning behind the lyrics: "The whole idea of 'Careless Whisper' was the first girl finding out about the second - which she never did.”

Faith
Faith was not only the name Michael's first solo album, but also his second single as a solo artist. Speaking of the meaning behind the song, Michael said: “It represents the way I feel at the moment. It's kind of another word for my hope and optimism. You know, faith to me is just really such a strong word and the more I got into the idea of the song being the single, the more I liked the idea of using it as the title track.” ‘Faith’ won the Grammy award for Album of the Year and it spent six non-consecutive weeks at number one in the US.

Freedom! '90
George was trying to free himself from his label Sony at the time of this song. They had created a specific image of him to promote his ‘Faith’ album, and Michael was now trying to distance himself from it. Freedom! ‘90 was released with Columbia Records in 1990 and the video was one of Michael’s most memorable as it featured top models Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz were the focus of the video. The ‘Freedom! '90’ video destroyed symbols of Michael's earlier career, like a jukebox and a leather jacket connected to the video for his song ‘Faith’. The jacket burned along to the lyrics "sometimes the clothes do not make the man”.

Father Figure
George Michael wrote this song before his homosexuality was public knowledge, but he himself admitted that at that time in 1987 he knew he was attracted to men. The lyrics are purposely ambiguous, but the song is about loving someone in every way and wanting to be everything to them. Although the lyrics are beautiful and it topped the US charts, ‘Father Figure’ was his first song to not reach the top 10 in the UK. Its blend of pop-gospel balladry and R&B sensuality made Michael a crossover artist, attracting racially diverse listeners, expanding his audience.

Outside
‘Outside’ was the first single George released after being arrested for engaging in a 'lewd act' in a public toilet in Beverly Hills, California, in 1998. The incident prompted him to come out as gay to the world. The track was a joyous, disco-infused jam using humour to poke fun at the incident; even including direct samples of radio reports on his arrest in the song and who could forget the video with George dressed as an American cop. Speaking on CNN in 1998 after his arrest, Michael said: "The first half of my career being accused of being gay when I hadn't had anything like a gay relationship, in fact I was 27 before that happened to me. So, I spent my years growing up being told what my sexuality was.”

Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me ft. Elton John
George and Elton first performed the song together at the Live Aid concert in 1985, with George singing and Elton playing piano as well as sharing the vocals. Six years later, George surprised his fans on tour with a special appearance from Sir Elton John to perform this classic anthem once again. It was so popular that it was released as a single and reached number one in the UK. The footage used for the music video was taken from a live concert in Chicago with 70,000 fans.

Praying for Time
‘Praying for Time’ is a sombre look at people suffering from poverty and injustice. Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, he said: “No event inspired it. It’s my way of trying to figure out why it’s so hard for people to be good to each other. We’re taught that you have to grab what you can before it’s gone. It’s almost as if there isn’t time for compassion.” Michael’s relationship with record label Sony fell apart, and he refused to make a music video for the track, resulting in an early version of the lyric video.

I Can't Make You Love Me
The song was written by country songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin and was originally recorded by American singer Bonnie Raitt in 1991. George covered the song which was released in 1997 as the fourth single from his album ‘Older’ The song and album both reached number three on the UK Singles Chart. In 2011, Adele covered the song for her first live album, ‘Live at the Royal Albert Hall’. Her version reached the UK Top 40.

Jesus to a Child
‘Jesus to a Child’ reached number one in the UK in 1996 and remains one of George's best-known love songs. This track is beautiful, and it is thought that George wrote it in less an hour. The song is a tribute to his lover Anselmo Feleppa who he met during a performance at the Rock in Rio II Festival in Rio de Janeiro in 1991. Feleppa died only two years after. Michael said that he had never felt real love until he met Anselmo. That's why he dedicated this song and the whole ‘Older’ album to his late boyfriend.

This smooth dance track was the second single from Michael's third album, ‘Older’, following the melancholy release ‘Jesus To A Child’. It is inspired by Patrice Rushen’s 1982 R&B hit ‘Forget Me Nots’ and was a massive hit, topping the charts in six countries: Australia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. It sold 465,504 copies in the UK and was nominated for Best Single at the 1997 BRIT Awards. At one point in the video, one of the dancers is shown wearing headphones displaying the word 'FONY' in the style of the Sony corporate logo, a reference to the contractual dispute Michael was having at the time with Sony Music Entertainment.

He said: “This time around we’ve been in lockdown, [we] have a studio, have every keyboard, drum machine, piano – everything I could want – and f****** time.
“The one piece that’s been missing [on previous albums] is the time, and now the time is there.”
The ‘Ready to Start’ star admitted earlier this year that writing for the Canadian group's first LP since 2017's 'Everything Now’ had “intensified” in lockdown, while he revealed they previously recorded a track called 'Age of Anxiety'.
Win also admitted he believes the health crisis will "only strengthen music as an art form", despite the devastating financial impact it’s having on the industry.
In a handwritten note to fans posted on Instagram, he wrote: “We had been exploring a lot of lyrical and musical themes that feel almost eerily related to what is happening now (we actually have a song called Age of Anxiety written a year ago for Christ’s sake – ha ha ).
“Needless to say, the writing has intensified, and the work is flowing out… It is challenging as ever, and with just as much purpose.
“Though this crisis may ultimately change or destroy aspects of the music industry, I believe it will only strengthen music as an art form. It has never felt more essential, spiritual and irreplaceable…a church that lives in the air between the source and your ears. (sic)"
