Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays chess genius Beth in the miniseries, agreed to take part in Scott Frank’s project before even reading the script. As soon as he sent her a copy of Tevis’s book she was sold. She said: “I’m not a runner, but I ran to meet Scott. I was at the end of Hyde Park and I ran to meet him in Mayfair. I thought I was going to walk so I could show up and be cool, but I got too excited. I was so passionate about the character and story.”

Much Beth’s look and hairstyle is based on the ‘Miracle On 34th Street’ stars’ look in 60s. A number of wigs were used on set to replicate the styles, which were styled overnight with rollers to maintain the waves. The series saw Brodie-Sangster return to screens after two years
The Netflix series was Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s first acting credit after a long break. His confident and charismatic character Benny is loosely based on chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer and comes head-to-head with Beth as a rival and love interest. The actor had already worked with Scott Frank on 2017 Western ‘Godless’ and accepted the role immediately when asked.

It was mostly set in Berlin
Although much of the drama is set in the US and includes scenes in Paris, Russia and Mexico, the film was mostly shot in Berlin, Germany or in Canada. The scenes of the tournament in Moscow were filmed in Der Bärensaal im Alten Stadthaus in the centre of Berlin for example. Other locations were enhanced by technology to look the part. The Hotel Mariposa in Las Vegas is really the Palais am Funkturm building in Berlin but was modified to add palm trees and a new building.

Actress Emilia Clarke prepared for her epic speech in the final episode of Game of Thrones by studying the evil orators of history — including British actress Emilia Clarke has opened up about preparing for her epic Game of Thrones finale speech and the dark places she went to for inspiration.
Typically, the fictional language was scripted months in advance for filming, but Emilia was able to improvise for the scene in season five after her experiences on the show up to that point.
Jeremy added: "I just had to hand it to Emilia for taking on the challenge and making it completely credible.
“Every single take, every intonation, and the way she phrased everything, you completely understood what she was meant to be saying. Then the subtitles all seemed authentic to what she was doing.
"She knew the language well enough at that point to make it all work. It wasn't tracking perfectly in Valyrian, but no fan ever noticed it. She did an amazing job.”
