Entertainment James Corden's American accent roasted after trailer for 'The Prom'

Social media’s tetchy relationship with James Corden has continued, as users have quickly savaged his American accent in the upcoming Netflix musical The Prom.

Directed by the omnipresent Ryan Murphy, the movie follows Corden, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells as Broadway stars who try to intervene when a high school girl is banned from attending the prom with her girlfriend.

The film has been adapted by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin from their 2018 stage musical of the same name.

A new trailer for the movie landed online on Thursday, where Twitter users were quickly baffled by Corden’s rather wobbly attempt at an American twang.

The Prom is the latest project in Murphy’s incredibly busy schedule, which has only grown in size since he signed a monster deal with Netflix worth $300m (£225m) over the next five years.

In the last few years alone, Murphy has created blockbuster series for the streamer including The Politician, Hollywood and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest prequel Ratched.

This is in addition to his long-running role as the showrunner for the blockbuster anthology series American Horror Story.

The Prom filmed earlier this year, but had to halt production in March when the onset of the coronavirus pandemic forced Hollywood to shut down.

Most of the leading actors had already wrapped and the final few days of shooting were able to take place over the summer.

The glittering ensemble cast was once even starrier, with Awkwafina and pop princess Ariana Grande being forced to step down from the project early on as a result of scheduling issues.

In terms of Corden, fans will be hoping that his involvement in another musical blockbuster will banish the memories of his performance as Bustopher Jones in Cats.

Even Cats creator Andrew Lloyd Webber couldn’t think of anything nice to say about that one, and Corden claims he still hasn’t seen it.

The Prom will debut on Netflix from 11 December.
