And Coronation Street star William Roache, 88, has revealed he briefly considered quitting the show in his 40s, after more than a decade as Ken Barlow.

The soap legend, who was only 28 when he first appeared on Corrie, said that while he did consider leaving to pursue other roles, he never thought about it seriously.

The 86-year-old – who’ s been on the ITV soap for six decades In a new interview with a Corrie fan blog, Bill opened up about the pressures of working on the show and how he overcame his fears.

The actor also insisted that he has no plans to retire his character Ken Barlow as the soap gears up to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Bill told The Sun: 'I'm getting younger every day. A lot of it is just belief.

'It's a collective consciousness, ''Oh I am too old for this''. It's all in the mind. I wasn't joking when I said I was getting younger every year.

'If you think positively, your cells will renew themselves all the time. If you go down, the renewal process will go down. If you stay up, the renewal process will go up. You don't have to age as much as people think. I'm not, anyway.'
