Coronation Street has confirmed that this year's Christmas Day episode will centre around David and Shona Platt.

The couple will feature in heartwarming scenes in the hour-long festive special, which sees their relationship reach a major turning point.

In the build-up to Christmas, viewers will see David (Jack P Shepherd) and Shona (Julia Goulding) sit down for a heart-to-heart over their future.

As they talk, Shona gets confused and inadvertently gives David the impression that she doesn't want to be with him anymore.

David Platt (previously Tilsley) is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera, Coronation Street . He was born on-screen during the episode broadcast on 25 December 1990. He was played by Thomas Ormson from his first appearance until 15 March 2000 when Ormson left.

Shona Platt (née Ramsey ) is the wife of David Platt and stepmother of Max and Lily . Before meeting David , Shona already had a connection to him, being the estranged mother of Clayton Hibbs , the teen who stabbed David ' s first wife Kylie to death in 2016 .

Although hurt by this, David tells Shona that it's time to accept that their marriage isn't working.

Shona is left feeling disappointed and isolated as it becomes clear that she and David may be splitting up. Roy Cropper and Nina Lucas encourage Shona to be more honest with David, but she struggles to make much progress.

On Christmas Day itself, David and Shona are brought together again as they have to take Lily to A&E when she gets a jewellery bead stuck up her nose.

Shona is great with Lily during the crisis and David secretly struggles as he realises how much his beloved wife will be missed by the kids when she moves out.

Back on the street later, David approaches a festive drinks stall outside the pub and Jenny Connor's stepdaughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) tries to flirt with him.

Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod first teased this storyline in September, telling Digital Spy and other media: "We were very keen to make the David and Shona story a really unusual story about two people having to fall in love with each other again. They've gone from being as close as two people can be to becoming basically strangers.

"We wanted to explore how we got them back to closeness, intimacy and a happy ending. In short, it will be a happy ending. It will be resolved on or around Christmas, and I'm really pleased with the story."

Coronation Street airs these scenes on Christmas Day at 7pm on ITV.
