At the start of season 4 we find out that Cassie wants to retire but lands at a crossroads when she is forced to return to work.
It follows on from the end of series 3 when Cassie decided to take a much-needed break from the police force after the investigation into the murder of a teenage girl who disappeared on New Year's Eve in 1999.
The series followed four suspects after remains were found on the M1 motorway twenty years later, but the truth finally came out when GP Doctor Tim Finch confessed.
The detectives found a hair tie, underwear and a necklace in his cellar and after interviewing him it turned out the doctor had killed a number of girls over many decades, which he later gave the names of.
When asked if he was the killer in the series finale, he responded: "I am. If we can do this properly, if we can do this with respect, if we can avoid turning it all into some sort of sordid circus – I'll tell you where the others are buried too."
Unforgotten season four: why did DCI Cassie Stuart leave the police?
Unforgotten season four sees Cassie being forced back into work in the police force - but why did she quit in the first place?
Following the chilling revelation and 30 years of investigating murders, Cassie decided to take some time off to rest.
Speaking about her character's return in season 4, Nicola said: "When we left Cassie at the end of the last series she felt it necessary to stop, she definitely had what would have been loosely termed 'a breakdown' and we were left wondering if she was going to come back.
"When we meet her this series you realise she doesn't really want to come back but she is in a terrible position that she will lose a massive amount of her pension pay out on a technicality if she doesn't come back and complete a certain number of months to comply with her pension."
Nicola continued: "It is awful, she is in a complete trap so she agrees to come back so she can access the full amount of her pension because her dad is getting more and more ill and she is looking at the fact that she will probably be financially responsible for her father's care.
"So she is completely caught. Her entire career she has very dedicatedly given to the police force. She is angry and feels very betrayed and that's how she goes into this series' story.
"Having gone through what she went through in the last storyline… she knows that she is broken, that she should stop but also on a practical level, she literally cannot leave the police force without that settlement and why should she?"
Unforgotten continues Monday, March 1 at 9pm on ITV.
