Nothing is right at the Golden Globes . The first major cinema awards ceremony scheduled for Sunday, February 28, before the Cesar, Bafta and Oscars that will follow, has been controversial for several days. And for good reason: many actors denounce the lack of diversity among the nominees, but also the absence of journalists of color in the 87 members who make up the jury of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the remitting organization. Among them, Ellen Pompeo , star of the series Grey's Anatomy , who has raised a rant on Instagram.

Ellen Pompeo calls her "white colleagues" to speak

The 51-year-old American actress published an open letter, addressed directly to the 87 international journalists of the HFPA. She denounces "an unacceptable equity problem" and asks those in charge to quickly find a solution. "It's an easy problem to solve. In Hollywood, we are the kings of problem solving. (…) We can't let the black community and all of our communities of color solve this. It's our problem, not theirs ”, she also explains.

Ellen Pompeo doesn't stop there. In her letter, she appeals to her white colleagues in the film and television industry. "I would like my white colleagues in this industry to raise their voices, show up and make sure this problem is solved."

A toy like, say, Netflix’s Bridgerton, Shonda Rhimes’ first series produced for the streamer. The soapy drama tells the love story of Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), a white socialite, and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), a dashing Black duke, through the lens of a purposefully racially integrated Regency era London. Bridgerton inspired an entire TikTok musical.

Olivia Wilde also protests against the lack of diversity

Actress Olivia Wilde also denounced the lack of diversity and especially the inaction of the HFPA in the face of this problem. "This is really absurd. (…) It is time for the HFPA to make deep and structural changes" , she wrote on Instagram.

In response to this vast controversy, the HFPA assured to commit now to "to include more black members, but also members representing different horizons" . "We will work immediately on putting a plan in place to achieve these goals as soon as possible." But for the 2021 edition, it is already too late.
