Sometimes, not every spotlight is meant to be shared, and some artists are just made for the solo life. It might be heartbreaking to watch a member of your favorite group announce that they’re leaving, but sometimes the fans get even better music. Over the years, we’ve seen many singers go solo, and we’ve gotten some great songs from them. So, let’s take a look at 10 artists who decided to go their own way...
Take That had a constant chart presence in the 90s, with almost every album and song topping the UK charts. However, in 1995, Robbie decided he did not want to be in Gary Barlow's shadow any longer and quit the boy band. He went on to achieve seven UK number one singles, twelve studio albums with six of his albums being among the top 100 biggest-selling albums in the UK, and in 2006 he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for selling 1.6 million tickets of his Close Encounters Tour in a single day.
In March 2015, Zayn Malik broke the hearts of Directioners all over the world when he announced his departure from One Direction. He said in a statement that he desired to live as a “normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.” A year after leaving the band, Zayn released ‘Pillowtalk’, which debuted at number one on the UK and US charts, making him the first British artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US. Since then, he’s released three solo albums and has worked with other artists like Taylor Swift and Sia on some incredibly successful singles.
Justin Timberlake rose to fame as one of the two lead vocalists in NSYNC but despite being in one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, he decided that the solo route was for him. In 2002, Justin ventured out on his own and released his debut studio album ‘Justified’, which led to him taking home two Grammy Awards. Since then, he’s become one of the world’s best-selling music artists, selling over 32 million albums and 56 million singles globally. Justin has also accumulated numerous awards, including 10 Grammys, four Emmys, three Brit Awards, and nine Billboard Music Awards.
As the lead vocalist in Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé became one of the biggest girl groups of all-time. Since releasing her debut solo album ‘Dangerously in Love’ in 2003 the singer has become one of the biggest ever female solo singers. Beyoncé has sold 118 million records worldwide and was the first artist to have their first six solo studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Beyoncé recently made history once again at the 2021 Grammys, becoming the most decorated female artist at the ceremony with a total of 28 accolades.
After five years as Genesis’ drummer and another three of being their lead singer, Phil Collins decided to embark on a solo career. He went on to release eight studio albums and numerous chart-topping singles. Phil is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as a solo artist and separately as principal members of a band.
After four years with Fifth Harmony, Camila Cabello left Harmonizers stunned when she announced her departure from the band in December 2016. In May 2017, Camila released her debut solo single ‘Crying in the Club’ and then released her debut studio album ‘Camila’ in January 2018, which reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The singer released another studio album, ‘Romance’ in 2019, and is set to star in the upcoming film adaptation of ‘Cinderella’.
Stevie Nicks is the member of Fleetwood Mac who has had the most successful solo career away from the band. In 1981, Stevie released her debut solo LP ‘Bella Donna’, which topped the Billboard 200 and is considered a classic now. Since then, she has released eight solo albums, which have given us hits like ‘Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around’ and ‘Edge of Seventeen'. Go your own way? She did but still sells out stadiums with Fleetwood Mac to this day.
In December 2020, Jesy Nelson made the shock announcement that she was leaving Little Mix after nine years because of the impact that being in the band was having on her mental health. In a statement, she said: “I need to spend some time with the people I love, doing things that make me happy. I’m ready to embark on a new chapter in my life – I’m not sure what it’s going to look like right now, but I hope you’ll still be there to support me." Three months later, it was confirmed that Jesy is set to launch a solo career under YMU, whose clients already include Take That, Steve Aoki and Fearne Cotton.
