Downton Abbey's Lily James is following her heart – and causing a stir – in the first trailer for new BBC period drama The Pursuit of Love.

The Amazon Prime Video co-production, which also stars Sherlock and Fleabag star Andrew Scott, will launch on Sunday, May 9 on BBC One and if this trailer is anything to go by there's a lot to look forward to in the three-part drama, which is set in the period between the World Wars.

The trailer introduces us to the passionate Linda Radlett (played by Cinderella star James) and her quieter, more uncertain cousin Fanny Logan (Into the Badlands actress Emily Beecham). Linda soon begins to shake up Fanny's life, throwing her diary out of the window and heading out to parties with her.

However, not everybody is pleased with Linda's actions and it seems that her conservative father, played by The Wire's Dominic West, isn't afraid of some tough punishment.

"I aspire to true love," Linda declares, before we see her enjoying plenty of social gatherings, as well as promising to help "fight the fascists" – after she's got dressed following her bath, of course.

Linda's neighbour Lord Merlin (Scott) also makes an appearance in the trailer, announcing to Linda that "love is for grown-ups".

The series will follow Linda and Fanny on their adventures around Europe as they search for their true loves, but will they find them and will their friendship survive as they head in different directions?

The series is based on Nancy Mitford's novel of the same name, with Mary Poppins Returns actress Emily Mortimer writing and directing the adaptation. She also stars in the series.

Also among the cast are Star Trek: Discovery's Shazad Latif, Dracula star Dolly Wells and The Crown actor Freddie Fox.

Mortimer previously said of her decision to take on the adaptation: "I've always loved Nancy Mitford so when I was asked to adapt The Pursuit of Love, it was impossible to say no.

"It's an outrageously funny and honest story, whose central character – the wild, love-addicted Linda Radlett – still reads as a radical."

The Pursuit of Love begins on Sunday, May 9 at 9pm on BBC One and all three episodes will then be available to watch as a boxset on BBC iPlayer. The series will be available on Amazon Prime Video in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
