I’m particularly delighted to see the plaudits that the actor Martin Compston is receiving. The Greenock-born star has played Detective Inspector Steve Arnott in Line of Duty since 2012 and also appeared in a host of top class TV dramas and films.

His acting breakthrough came in Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen, which earned success at the Cannes Film Festival and "Most Promising Newcomer” at the British Independent Film Awards.

Compston fans will be able to see him again soon in the forthcoming thriller Vigil which was filmed and is set in Scotland aboard a nuclear submarine.

In addition to the weekend series finale of Line of Duty, Compston took part in an online SNP rally for the Scottish Parliament elections.

He joined fellow high-profile SNP supporters, including actors Brian Cox and Alan Cumming, the star crime writer Val McDermid and Mogwai frontman Stuart Braithwaite.

With only days to go until the Holyrood election, the actor told voters: "Scotland's future is in your hands. Don't leave it to chance. The only way to make sure we re-elect Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister is to make it both votes SNP. Make sure you and all your pals get out to vote."
