Tom Cruise has handed back his three Golden Globe awards in protest against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's lack of representation and inclusion among its membership.
actor Cruise joins stars Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson who are among those in Hollywood speaking out against the HFPA.
reports that Cruise sent the trophies he won for Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia to HFPA headquarters.

Ruffalo said in a statement: "It's discouraging to see the HFPA, which has gained prominence and profited handsomely from their involvement with filmmakers and actors, resist the change that is being asked of them from many of the groups that have been most disenfranchised by their culture of secrecy and exclusion.
"Now is the time to step up and right the wrongs of the past. Honestly, as a recent winner of a Golden Globe, I cannot feel proud or happy about being a recipient of this award."
Johansson also released a statement, recalling facing "sexist questions and remarks" from HFPA members "that bordered on sexual harassment".

"It is the exact reason why I, for many years, refused to participate in their conferences," she continued. "The HFPA is an organisation that was legitimised by the likes of Harvey Weinstein to amass momentum for Academy recognition and the industry followed suit.
"Unless there is necessary fundamental reform within the organisation, I believe it is time that we take a step back from the HFPA and focus on the importance and strength of unity within our unions and the industry as a whole."
The HFPA has faced renewed scrutiny following areport earlier this year which highlighted that it has no Black voting members. The association's financial arrangements and membership criteria have also been criticised.
Meanwhile, NBC has announced it will not be airing the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony.

"We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform," the broadcaster said. "However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes.
"Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023."
Last week, studiosalso took a stand, saying they would stop doing business with the HFPA until more significant reforms take place. WarnerMedia has since joined them, according to .
In response to NBC pulling the 2022 awards show, the HFPA issued a statement, with a timeline for reforms to the organisation.
The reforms include revising and approving a new code of conduct in consultation with publicists and studios, continuing outreach to potential new member candidates and beginning a search for a chief DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)/HR officer and identifying of a potential new CEO/CFO and other executives to lead the organisation."

The HFPA added: "Regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, implementing transformational changes as quickly – and as thoughtfully – as possible remains the top priority for our organization.
"We invite our partners in the industry to the table to work with us on the systemic reform that is long overdue, both in our organization as well as within the industry at large."
