Near-fatal car accident
George Lucas had a huge passion for car racing, and wanted to be a racing driver when he grew up. If not for a near-fatal car accident, Lucas may have never become a filmmaker. As a teen, he raced on local circuits and just days before he was supposed to graduate high school, he was involved in a horrific accident that nearly took his life. The collision was so violent that it snapped Lucas’ seatbelt and he flew out of the car. After the accident he gave up that dream to pursue directing instead.
Rejected from the army

George and Steven Spielberg built “lucky sandcastles”
The Indiana Jones partnership between George Lucas and Steven Spielberg began under the Hawaiian sun. The pair escaped to Hawaii following the release of the first ‘Star Wars’ film and in 2008, Spielberg recounted how the beachside pitch saw them establish a new superstition. He said: “He pitched me the story, and I committed on the beach. We started a tradition of building lucky sandcastles. So, we used to build sandcastles in Hawaii, and if the sandcastle withstood the first high tide, the film was a hit. If the high tide overran the sandcastle, we were going to have to struggle to make our money back. That was our superstition and that was our tradition.”
Michael Jackson nearly played Jar Jar Binks
George Lucas was originally going to have none other than the late Michael Jackson play the character of Jar Jar Binks. Jackson was actually really excited about the part, but the deal eventually fell through over creative differences. MJ only wanted to do the part if he could physically play Jar Jar in costume, while George insisted that the character be entirely computer animated. Jackson dropped out, and Ahmed Best was cast instead.

This gave Disney control of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise and Lucas 40 million shares from Disney. Lucas said in an interview: “I could have not sold Lucasfilm and gotten somebody to run the productions, but that isn't retiring. On ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ I tried to stay out of the way, but I couldn't. I was there every day.”
