Britney Spears will appear remotely at a court meeting today about how her career has been managed under an arrangement known as a conservatorship.

This court-ordered agreement effectively gives her father, Jamie Spears, control over her estate, business and personal affairs.

It came into force after the singer experienced a mental health episode in 2008, but Britney has been trying to remove her father from his position as conservator.

Her battle gained worldwide recognition when the documentary, Framing Britney Spears, was released earlier this year.

It showed her rise to fame, introductions in the workings of the music industry and the subsequent fallout of her mental health crisis, and her father’s ability to control her business and personal affairs.

She now returns to court to see if she can gain more independence and freedom.

What is a conservatorship?

In the US, a conservatorship exists so that a legal parent or guardian may be granted management of the financial affairs or daily life of another person, if they become physically or mentally limited. This control is granted by a judge to the conservator.

Free Britney is the movement started by fans who have feared for her health, wellbeing and safety in recent years as the details of Britney Spears’ financial and continued mental health struggles have come to light.

The conservatee may be someone who is old with conditions such as dementia, but also someone who is psychotic, suicidal or incapacitated.

There are two parts to Britney’s conservatorship: one is her estate and financial affairs, the other is for her as an individual.

Her father Jamie was in charge of both of these parts, but stepped down three years ago due to ill health. A care professional, Jodi Montgomery, replaced him temporarily , but Britney has requested that she take up this role permanently.

What has actually happened?

After Britney’s divorce from Kevin Federline in 2007, her behaviour was called into question after some bizarre and unpredictable choices. She was admitted to hospital twice the following year and a temporary conservatorship was established and has been expanded upon in the past deacde.

During this time, she has continued to release multiple albums and has been on numerous tours and appearances on US shows, as well as residencies in Las Vegas.

While Spears has appeared to be largely complicit in these matters, court documents acquired by the New York Times show that it is actually the opposite.

She remarked that the conservatorship came with “a lot of fear” and that her father would lay out “very harsh” consequences if Britney made any mistakes.

She also claimed that she “had been forced to perform while sick with a 104-degree fever [40C], calling it one of the scariest moments of her life.”

Britney also alleges that her father would take large amounts of her money for his own personal salary, and limited her weekly allowances.

A dedicated cohort of fans have supported the star in her battle against her conservatorship. The #FreeBritney campaign believes the singer has been coerced into entering into this agreement and regularly protest outside her court appearances.

Britney has said the conservatorship saved her from collapse and exploitation, but she has sought more control over how it operates, and says she wants her father removed from his role. It is hoped that the hearings will also give the singer more autonomy.
