Actress Charlotte Gainsbourg's first outing as a film director nearly fell at the first hurdle, she said, when her mother Jane Birkin, the driving force behind the documentary, got cold feet. Gainsbourg, whose late father Serge Gainsbourg is a singer-songwriting legend in France and beyond, has long tried to break away from the shadow of her famous parents. For the benefit of movie lovers, ‘Cannes and Netflix should kiss and make up’
For the third edition in a row, Netflix is nowhere to be seen at the world’s premier film festival. But after more than a year of pandemic-induced binge streaming, settling Cannes’ dispute with the digital platform is more critical than ever. When Bong Joon-ho took his black comedy “Parasite” to the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, the veteran auteur voiced concern that the movie might be “too South Korean” for the audience. He needn’t have worried. The film elicited rave reviews and rapturous applause in Cannes, where it picked up South Korea’s first Palme d’Or.
As well as The Old Guard,Ejiofor will soon be heard in as the voice behind the villainous Scar.
His other roles include 12 Years a Slave, Love Actually, Z for Zachariah and 2012.
