The first episode of BBC One's Vigil really didn't hold back, shocking viewers within the first few minutes.

The show sees Suranne Jones as police detective Amy Silva who is parachuted onto HMS Vigil, a military submarine, to investigate a crew member's death onboard.

Also starring in the series is Line of Duty's Martin Compston, Bodyguard's Anjli Mohindra, Sex Education's Connor Swindells, and Game of Thrones stars Rose Leslie and Daniel Portman.

Viewers were utterly shocked when Martin Compston's character, Chief Petty Officer Craig Burke, was found dead within the first few minutes of the opening episode.

What starts out as quite an obvious cause of death quickly turns into a murder investigation in which Silva gets very little support from the vessel's captain and senior officers.

But viewers just couldn't believe it. One wrote on Twitter: "I am watching #Vigil purely for Martin Compston and he dies within the first 8 minutes, I haven't been this upset since the Line of Duty finale."

Another viewer thinks we're all being trolled: "Waited for Martin Compston in #Vigil since the Line of Duty finale fiasco and 8 minutes in and they've killed him off. The writer is absolutely laughing his head off at us isn't he."

Jokers poke fun at 'most spacious sub in the world' on BBC's Vigil

Jokers poke fun at 'most spacious sub in the world' on BBC's Vigil The BBC's Vigil airs on Sundays and follows a murder investigation onboard a submarine but viewers took to social media to poke fun at the seemingly unending amount of space. The military community have been vocal about what they feel are glaring inaccuracies in the show's portrayal of life onboard a Royal Navy submarine with everything from incorrect uniforms to the way the crew behaves.

A third tweeted: "SORRY HAVE THEY KILLED OFF STEVE ARNOTT IN THE FIRST EPISODE #Vigil."

While there are many jokes on social media about Line of Duty's H getting in there and finishing the job off by killing Compston's character, it does seem like there are going to be many twists and turns before the mystery is solved.

The opening episode of the six-part thriller didn't stop moving the whole way through and there was not a minute to ponder who did it – mainly because by the end of the hour, it looks like any of the crew could have.

Vigil continues tomorrow (August 30) on BBC One at 9pm.
