Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 trailer teases character returning in crossover It's been confirmed that a whole bunch of characters will be back. In the opening few seconds of the promo, which was released by ABC on September 19, the doctor's late mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) – who passed away back in season three – can be heard giving her daughter a rousing, typically stern-sounding pep talk. Presumably referencing Meredith's recent battle with COVID-19, which was the primary focus of season 17, she says, "You've survived the unthinkable, what are you gonna do, Meredith?" as she settles back into work at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital once again.

When season two arrives on our screens in December, however, there will be a big change to this narrative style, as star Cavill has told Entertainment Weekly that the second season will not feature the varying timelines that season one was characterised by.
