Back in 1986, Brian May penned Queen song Who Wants To Live Forever, which featured on the band's album A Kind of Magic and on the soundtrack for the movie Highlander. Now, 35 years later, and the guitarist has released a new version of the song to raise awareness for the charity initiative Young Hearts Africa Foundation. The 74-year-old began the single's music video with a special message.

May said: "Hello, I'm Brian May. Every year in Africa thousands of children die from congenital heart disease.

"The saddest thing is these tragic deaths could be avoided if their parents could only pay for the lifesaving operations that they need. The Young Hearts Africa Foundation is giving hope to these children.

On recording with Brian and Kerry, the Cape Town-based Dr Lichtenberg said: "I'm still pinching myself. It's totally surreal. The enormity and the extent of the privilege certainly hasn't even begun to sink in.

While on the charity initiative the singing surgeon added: "No one can live forever.

"But by raising the funds needed to keep the hearts of Africa's children beating, we can build on a legacy which will be there to serve our children long after we are gone."

An accompanying statement read: "Cardiovascular disease is the third most common single cause of death in South Africa and the rest of the African continent."

It added: "Dr Lichtenberg says that heart disease in children places a devastating burden on families and communities and the prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa is almost ten times higher than in developed countries.

"Funds raised through this initiative will be donated to The Children's Cardiac Foundation for Africa, in addition to benefitting the 1000 Hearts initiative by the Christiaan Barnard Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the world-famous Groote Schuur Hospital and the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town.
