If you’ve been to Birmingham over the last few weeks, you may have bumped into some of the filming for two new TV series.
Citadel, from Amazon Prime Video, and DI Ray, from ITV, have landedfor their upcoming releases.
The two shoots are different, though, with one being a spy series and the other a crime thriller drama.
Still, if you’ve been to Birmingham recently you may have been wondering why the film crews are here, what roads have been closed and if any big names have been to visit. Here’s what we know.
Chris Pratt to voice Garfield in upcoming animation
Chris Pratt has landed a new voice acting gig as the most famous cat, Garfield.According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 42-year-old actor is set to portray the lazy, lasagne-loving tabby in an upcoming feature by Sony Pictures.
Why are there film crews in Birmingham?
There are multiple film crews shooting in Birmingham for the upcoming Amazon Prime Video series, Citadel, and the ITV thriller, DI Ray.
Citadel has been described as a spy series which is “action-packed” consisting of a “compelling” emotional focus, by independent production company, AGBO, who are behind its creation.
It added the film was about “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.”
DI Ray, meanwhile, on ITV is a four-part crime thriller drama written by the Line of Duty star, Maya Sondhi.
The series stars protagonist Parminder Nagra as Rachita Ray who serves as a police detective but agrees to a brief which sees her torn between her British born Leicester identity and her South Asian heritage.
These TV shows are based on foreign series
Big Brother, The Office, Ugly Betty the American versions of these series have been so successful that they’re assumed to be the "official" versions. But these series are actually adaptations of original series that were created everywhere from Colombia to the Netherlands and Japan.
She reckons she’s been chosen to solve a murder case because of tokenism, rather than for her ability and previous experience.
Agreeing to take on what is a rather dangerous criminal underworld, she continues probing the homicide, disentangling the emotional and personal difficulties of her identity that she’s bottled up for years.
What roads have been closed in Birmingham?
Roads in some parts of Birmingham city centre were closed while filming took place for the Amazon and ITV shows.
ITV’s DI Ray saw scene shooting take place in St Paul’s Square in the Jewellery Quarter and at the Three Snowhill in the Colmore Business District.
Just a stone’s throw from that saw filming take place for Amazon’s Citadel. Ludgate Hill car park saw scene shooting take place for the series.
Edmund Street, near to Colmore Row, has beenwhile scenes were filmed for the upcoming release. Chamberlain Square was also used.

Sources toldearlier this week that setting up the roads for filming was taking place from Friday, November 12 with shooting beginning on Monday, November 15.
Rows of cars and buses have been spotted on the street. Police vans have also been seen nearby, believed to be connected to the filming.
What big names have been in Birmingham for the filming?
Star-struckParminder Nagra for ITV series, DI Ray.
Nagra is best known for her appearance as the character of Jess Bhamra in the smash hit early twenty-first century movie, Bend It Like Beckham.
Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden wasfor filming of Amazon’s Citadel series.
Co-stars Priyanka Chopra and Stanley Tucci, who starred in the Hunger Games, may also have been in the city.
The filming for the two shows comes after Hollywood legend Tom Cruise was spotted shooting scenes in Birmingham for Mission Impossible 7 back in August, including at the city’s train station.
While here, he was spotted dining inon Newhall Street, where he is thought to have ordered a chicken tikka masala dish with plain naan bread.
He reportedly stayed aton Colmore Row in the city, where rooms can cost £2,000 a night.
