Dame Emma Thompson, who was in the audience, had asked Adele who had inspired her when she was young, prompting the 33-year-old star to speak about her year eight teacher.
And the 'Love Actually' actress left Adele stunned when she revealed the teacher was in the audience.

Gallery: Ed Sheeran thought he was gay?! These stars questioned and explored their sexuality (BANG Showbiz)
Sexuality is fluid!
Ed Sheeran made headlines this week after revealing that he thought he was gay when he was growing up. The ‘Shivers’ hitmaker – who is now married to Cherry Seaborn – questioned his sexuality because enjoyed "feminine" activities like watching musicals and listening to pop music by Britney Spears. As well as Ed did you know these stars questioned their sexuality?
Tom Daley has been out, proud and married to Hollywood director Dustin Lance Black since 2017. But life wasn’t always so easy for the Olympic diver, who first came out as bisexual in 2013 in a YouTube video. He said: “Now I feel ready to talk about my relationships. In spring this year, my life changed when I met someone who made me feel so happy and safe. That someone is a guy and it did take me by surprise a little bit. Of course I still fancy girls, but right now I’m dating a guy.” Despite attesting that he was bisexual, the confused diver confirmed less than a year later that he was in fact gay.
Lady Gaga has been keeping fans guessing on her own sexuality since she burst onto the scene with the anthem ‘Pokerface’, which is said to allude to the dynamics of bisexuality. The singer hinted way back in 2009 when the smash hit was released that she may be confused about her own sexuality. She explained: “There is something quite interesting about the song. If you listen to the lyrics in the chorus, I say, 'He's got me like nobody,' and then I say, 'She's got me like nobody.' It's got a bit of an undertone of confusion about love and sex.” Though having only publicly dated men, the pop megastar – who is currently in a relationship with CEO Michael Polansky - still identities as bisexual.
Former ‘Gossip’ singer Beth Ditto has been very open about the confusion she has faced over the years and admitted that she had a boyfriend in high school despite knowing she was gay. She said: “I had a high school boyfriend at the time but I cannot tell you how many times I broke up wth him because I was gay.” The rock singer – who married long term girlfriend Kristin Ogata in 2013 before splitting and moving on to trans bass player Ted Kwo – also admitted that as a teenager she felt she had to change her appearance to "make sense" of being a lesbian. She said: “I grew up not wearing make-up at all. I was coming out as a lesbian and trying to make sense of what make-up was within feminism and questioning whether you could be particularly feminine and be a feminist - which was ridiculous.”
Katy Perry may not have been kidding when she released the smash hit single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ way back in 2009. The raunchy pop anthem topped the charts globally but also attracted controversy from churches, parents and the hitmaker’s own mother. Katy – who is engaged to Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom – has admitted that was “curious" as a teenager. She said: “‘I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-sized pop songs. For instance ‘I Kissed a Girl’– and I liked it. "Truth be told I did more than that. I was curious. I knew that sexuality wasn’t as black and white as this dress.”
‘The Good Place’ star has been frank about her issues regarding her own sexuality many times over the years. Despite having been in a relationship with musician James Blake since 2015, she felt the need to come out as queer in 2020 when her role as presenter on ‘Legendary’, a reality show based around LGBT-rooted dance vogueing received backlash. In a since deleted tweet, she said: “I kept it low because I was scared of the pain of being accused of performative bandwagon jumping, over something that caused me a lot of confusion, fear, and turmoil when I was a kid.” She later told The Times newspaper: “I guess I’m bisexual, but also quite fancy everyone. "I don’t know if that means that I’m pansexual. But I don’t just fancy cis straight men; I fancy everyone.”
In a similar vein to Ed Sheeran, model Cara Delevingne was left questioning her sexuality because of the pop culture she experienced when she was a child. In Cara’s case, it was the Disney Princesses who left her confused. She said: “I never really wanted to accept my sexuality. I was like, ‘Disney Princesses all love men’. That's the way it is, and I'm not going to be a princess if I don't.' You know what I mean?” In the years since embarking on a career as a highly successful model, the now 29-year-old star identifies as pansexual and has had relationships with other high profile stars such as musician St Vincent and fellow model Ashley Benson. She currently single.
Following on neatly from Cara Delevingne is former Disney star and ‘The Heart Wants What it Wants’ hitmaker Selena Gomez, who was rumored to have been in a relationship with Cara. She repeatedly denied it and the pair were confirmed to just be close friends, but the ‘Wizards of Waverley Place’ star wasn’t too offended and admitted that she has even questioned her own sexuality over the years. She said: “Cara’s so fun and she's just extremely adventurous, and sometimes I just want that in my life, so I didn't mind it. I loved it. I think everybody does [question their sexuality] no matter who they are. I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it's healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it's important to do that.”
Miley Cyrus has long since been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and has in recent years opened up about the confusion she felt during her years as a child star. The ‘Midnight Sky’ singer – known for her provocative costumes and performances - was confused about her sexuality when she was starring in the title role of wholesome Disney Channel sitcom ‘Hannah Montana’, and could only come out as bisexual to her mom Tish Cyrus at age 14. She told Variety: “I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality. I always hated the word ‘bisexual’ because that’s even putting me in a box.”
“Adele spoke movingly about how her teacher was her inspiration as a teenager. When she realised she was actually in the audience, she brought her up on stage immediately, and broke down in tears. It was the big surprise of the night.”

Filming then halted while Adele had her make-up touched up and asked her friend Alan Carr to step in and entertain the audience, which he did with a comedy cover of his pal's version of 'Make You Feel My Love'.
The insider said: “Alan jumped on stage to take over while Adele — whose make-up had run — went to have it retouched.
“He did a brilliant job, he was super-entertaining. At one point, he sang 'Make You Feel My Love', but making up his own words. It was hilarious.”
The 'Hello' hitmaker recently admitted she hates being a celebrity.
She said: "I think it's hilarious that I'm an artist for my f****** job. But celebrity comes with it, and I'm not out for that.
"I don't like being a celebrity at all ... and this is my story, and I feel like it's me taking back my narrative."
