EastEnders fans are saying BBC is 'killing off' the show with the new runtime.

Fans of the soap took to Digital Spy's Forums after a viewer asked why 'EastEnders gets more of a hard time' from viewers than any other soap.

Last year Chris Clenshaw was named EastEnders' new executive producer after Jon Sen stepped down to oversee Casualty, as well as develop two new BBC drama projects.

Taking to the Digital Spy forum, some believed that EastEnders deserves the criticism it gets from fans due to not liking the storylines. They also said it was the reason EastEnders was reduced to shorter episodes.

Last year it was announced that EastEnders would run for a reduced time of 20 minutes instead of 30 minutes due to production difficulties during the pandemic.

However, ITV recently announced that their soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale will be rescheduled. Emmerdale will air at 7:30 pm instead of 7:00pm.

And Coronation Street will now have three one-hour episodes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, instead of six 30-minute episodes during the week.

On the digital forum, one person said: "I'm sorry, did you watch last nights episode of EE? Or anything recent for that matter??

"It deserves the hard time it's getting. It's the exact reason why ITV have cottoned on and have thought now is a good time to go in for the killer blow in their rescheduling."

And another said: "It’s also been very badly neglected by the BBC management. The ITV soaps aren’t and EE is. The BBC have taken their eye off the ball for years.

"ITV regularly has super soap week and promotes them. EE has Christmas Day and that’s it and looking at the ratings nowadays nobody cares about that."

EastEnders Christmas Day special is reported to have only pulled in pulled in 2.9 million viewers, which was less than Emmerdale and Coronation Street. The year before, EastEnders had 3.54 million viewers on their Christmas Day special.

After it aired, many took to Twitter to express how unimpressed they were with the Christmas episode.

One said: "Why did I waste 45 mins of my time on this s****? #EastEnders."

A second wrote: “The nation having eagerly waited all week for todays episode, only for it to be s****. #EastEnders."

And another tweeted: “Eh that was … okay? But can we have these Christmas specials again? #EastEnders."
