EastEnders star Rita Simons has been speaking about her experiences with depression after her marriage came to an end.

The Roxy Mitchell actress began to struggle with her mental health after splitting from Theo Silveston in 2018.

Rita revealed that she fell into ‘deep sadness’ during the separation period and had to force herself to get out and work.

The star also said she considered self-harming when she reached ‘crisis point’.

‘There was my anxiety, depression and OCD, but in the centre of all of that there was a really sad divorce happening’, Rita told The Sun.

‘I didn’t want to die. I just wanted to hurt myself enough to go to hospital and have someone look after me’.

Rita has since found love with actor Ben Harlow, who describes at the ‘loveliest man on the planet’.

The couple began dating in 2020 after meeting in 2017.

After playing the role of Roxy Mitchell from 2007-2017, Rita has gone on to appear in the play The House on Cold Hill and the TV series Stages of My Life.

Roxy and her EastEnders sister Ronnie were controversially killed off in 2017, with fans still campaigning for a return.
