Kylie Minogue did speak during the final episode of Neighbours – but only said five words.

Fans of the show and pop icon have been baffled by Kylie’s bizarrely muted appearance as a special guest in the final episode of the long-running Australian soap series. It aired its last show on Channel 5 on Friday after 37-years and 8,903 episodes.

Kylie, 54, made an appearance as character Charlene along with boyfriend Scott Robinson played by Jason Donovan. The pair return to Ramsay Street looking to move back and buy a house.

But during her appearances on screen in Charlene's trademark denim outfit, unlike other guest stars and cast members, Kylie barely had a word to say despite featuring in several scenes in the special hour long episode.

Fellow A-list guests such as Guy Pearce (Mike Young), Margot Robbie (Donna Freedman), Natalie Imbruglia (Beth Brennan) and Holly Valance (Felicity "Flick" Scully), all had dialogue as their former characters and joined in enthusiastically.

But sharp-eyed viewers did spot Kylie’s three brief moments of talking; once as she first appears with Donovan when she looks at the street and says ‘Home, sweet home’, then two single words “Jane” and “Harold” as she greets characters Jane 'Plain Jane Superbrain' Harris (Annie Jones) and Harold Bishop, played by Ian Smith.

But it wasn’t enough for fans. On Twitter, Katrina said: “Are you able to clear up why Kylie barely spoke? Was it because of her accent? The cost she was paid per word?”

A fan called "Ramsay Street" praised stars Pierce and Jones: They said: “No chance of Kylie stealing the show when Guy Pearce and Annie Jones did. They were outstanding.”

Viewer Paul Cherry said: “It was an odd episode….Kylie didn’t speak a single word… it was bizarre.” Another tweeter added: “No. That was weird. I need answers. Why didn't Kylie speak?”

There are suggestions Kylie may have been struggling with a throat infection and been unable to speak at length. Kylie herself has described her Neighbours cameo as "emotional". The pop superstar, who rose to fame starring in the soap, told Sky News it had been her "big break" and played a special role in her career.

The star said her return is a "blink and you'll miss me" moment, but the news had spread quickly and taken on "a life of its own". Neighbours, which first aired in 1985 and follows the lives of those living and working in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, shot its final scenes last week.
