Roderick Burgess is a black magician at the beginning of the 20th century - in the vein of the true-life English occultist, the infamous Aleister Crowley - who makes use of a rare occult tome, the Magdalene Grimoire, to carry out a ceremony with the aim of trapping the personification of Death.

However, his ceremony goes awry and instead of snaring Death, he instead captures her younger brother Dream - also known as Morpheus - another of the Endless. Despite the failure, he decides to make the most of the situation and Burgess strips a weakened and unconscious Dream of his symbols of power - a pouch containing sand, a helmet which Dream describes as his "helm of office" crafted from the spine and skull of a long dead god, and a ruby which is described as a powerful dreamstone which carries out Morpheus' wishes.

During this time, the world begins to see the effects of Dream being trapped, not least the 'sleepy sickness', a documented medical event which baffled doctors around the world at the time.
Burgess, by now a self-styled Lord Magus who presides over the Order of Ancient Mysteries, is himself betrayed by one of his flock and the symbols of Dream's power are stolen before being bartered away - the helm to a demon of Hell in exchange for protection while the ruby and pouch of sand is stolen by Burgess's former mistress.
The ruby later falls into the hands of a psychotic and truly disturbing Dr John Dee, played by David Thewlis, while the pouch disappears into the unseen world, only traceable by the cunning detective/occultist/magician Johanna Constantine, played by formerassistant Jenna Coleman.
