Celebrity male survivors speaking out about sexual abuse
There's still a great deal of stigma around speaking out as a survivor of sexual abuse. Women's stories are always being doubted and ulterior motives assumed. And on the other end of the spectrum, sexual assault against men is something some people consider to be a myth. Many wonder: how can strong men like Matthew McConaughey or Terry Crews be the victims of any kind of assault? The difficult truth is that it's about a lot more than physical strength. Quite often, it's more a question of power. Within families, an older relative can have significant influence and control over younger family members. In Hollywood, there are many powerful people who abuse their positions, and anyone can be a potential victim, regardless of gender. Marcus Mumford recently revealed that he was sexually abused as a child. The Mumford and Sons frontman is releasing his first solo album, called 'Self-Titled,' in which he addresses the traumatic event, and has decided to speak openly about it for the first time in three decades. “Like lots of people—and I’m learning more and more about this as we go and as I play it to people—I was sexually abused as a child,” Mumford told GQ. “Not by family and not in the church, which might be some people’s assumption. But I hadn’t told anyone about it for 30 years.
The 1890-set series, which comes from Black Earth Rising's Hugo Blick, is set to tackle the "core themes of identity and revenge to tell a uniquely compelling parable on race, love and power", with Locke and Whipp both having a strong sense of destiny, which is rooted in a shared past.
The synopsis continues: "They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their cores, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome it draws them closer to their ultimate destination, the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming.
"It is here, after an investigation by the local sheriff Robert Marshall (Stephen Rea) and young widow Martha Myers (Valerie Pachner) into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and they will come face to face with the future they must live."
