The former Beatle wrote to MEPs on Wednesday ahead of a key vote on Thursday, calling for them to support changes to copyright rules for online material that the EU says will help protect creators and publishers.

MEPs will vote on whether to approve a draft text of the new laws, which would allow the European Parliament to negotiate with the EU’s 28 governments on the reform.

Opposition to the copyright directive has been led by internet giants including Google and YouTube. They argue the proposed requirements to use filters on material uploaded by users and pay fees for showing “snippets” of information when people share links would curb internet freedom.

A petition against the reform led by critical MEPs, known as “Save Your Internet”, has gathered nearly 750,000 signatures.

Wikipedia, which would be excluded from most of the changes, yesterday shut down its Italian website in protest. The site also carried banners on its French domain urging users to sign the petition and pressure their MEPs to vote “No” in Strasbourg tomorrow.

Supporters of the rule changes say they would redress imbalances in the digital economy, where news and video content is not subject to the same level of intellectual property protection as other areas like music and broadcasting.

Mr McCartney’s letter calls on MEPs to vote “yes” tomorrow and allow negotiations on the reforms to continue.

“Today some user upload content platforms refuse to compensate artists and all music creators fairly for their work”, says the letter.

Axel Voss, the centre-right German MEP in charge of agreeing a compromise on the copyright text, said lawmakers were being influenced by a campaign of “fake news” from lobbyists opposed to the changes

“This is going beyond what is acceptable” said Mr Voss. “We had this with banks, with telecoms, and with internet giants. We will not end the internet”, he said.

The copyright directive will only come into force once it has the majority approval of EU governments and the European parliament.

YouTube gives creators a way to flag stolen videos .
YouTube keeps a watch over the millions of videos on its service, making sure that they don't violate copyright or community standards. The company removed 8.3 million videos for community guidelines violations in the last quarter of 2017. It hasn't revamped it's Content ID system to flag copyrighted videos since 2013, however. Now the Google-owned video sharing service is launching a new Copyright Match tool that can flag instances of videos that match content creators' original videos.
