Ministers last night launched a crackdown on unscrupulous funeral plan providers who prey on elderly people.

In a victory for The Mail on Sunday, Economic Secretary to the Treasury John Glen said the use of high-pressure and misleading tactics to sell expensive funeral plans would be brought to an end with the introduction of a new set of rules.

He announced that the funerals market would be regulated by City watchdog the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), meaning firms guilty of disreputable behaviour will face fines and even criminal charges.

Mr Glen launched a consultation last year to overhaul regulation in the market after a Mail on Sunday investigation found that a call centre for one of the UK's biggest funeral firms had been pressuring pensioners into buying £4,000 pre-paid plans.

Hundreds of thousands of people have bought such deals, which involve the customer making one or more payments to a provider who subsequently arranges or pays for their funeral when they die.

The FCA will now design new rules to bring funeral sales under the same type of regulation as other financial products such as insurance.
