Karlsruhe. The Federal Court of Justice protects users of a so-called basic account for low-income people from excessive fees. Deutsche Bank may no longer offer its basic account for EUR 8.99 a month as before.

According to the law, the costs must be reasonable. The banks are therefore not allowed to allocate their additional account management expenses solely to the holders of the basic accounts, as the Karlsruhe judges decided on Tuesday after a lawsuit filed by consumer advice centers against Deutsche Bank. They did not name a specific upper limit. From now on, Deutsche Bank will no longer be able to offer its basic account for EUR 8.99 a month as before. The basic account was introduced in 2016 to enable people with little money to do basic banking. For example, homeless people or refugees should also have a checking account.
