for two years. At the beginning of the week, KTM test driver Dani Pedrosa was in action in Jerez de la Frontera. In the calendar year 2021, it was the first MotoGP test of the Austrian brand. Since KTM is no longer considered a "concession team" in the future and you can no longer benefit from advantages in the regulations, the long-term development strategy is changing.

"Of course it makes it more difficult, but we really wanted to get into the same rhythm as the other teams," says KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer. "So far we never had to worry."

Crew chief Paul Trevathan is curious to see whether Oliveira will take another step in the works team. © Motorsport Images Pol Espargaro "Miguel is a very intelligent man.

"If we had something new for the engine, we could run three races with one engine and then we incorporate the next steps. That is no longer possible. That makes the test team even more important."

"You build something and it just has to fit. The rhythm is no longer monthly, but for twelve months. If you build something, the shot has to be right. That will certainly be a new challenge and task for us that we have to tackle first have to get used to. "

Statements from Pedrosa are very valuable

The test days of the regular drivers are now also restricted. This makes the assessment of Pedrosa even more important as he has to sort out parts before they go to the two racing teams. These, in turn, are relieved and can concentrate on their actual task.

"Dani works very well", praises team manager Mike Leitner, who has known the Spaniard very well for around 20 years. "He's always very honest. After the two years we know him at KTM and people are able to assess him and his statements better and better."

Dakar Rally 2021: Cornejo defends lead, Price falls outside

Dakar Rally 2021: Cornejo defends lead, Price falls outside © Honda Ignacio Cornejo increased his lead in the overall standings The ninth day of the Dakar Rally was extremely turbulent. With Toby Price (KTM) and Luciano Benavides (Husqvarna), two top riders were eliminated due to falls and injuries. Ignacio Cornejo (Honda) extended the lead in the overall standings. His team-mate Kevin Benavides secured the day's win. The ninth stage was driven in a loop around Neom. The terrain in the north of Saudi Arabia was very varied.

"Of course it's never easy. A young engineer works on a part for maybe a month and is super proud. And the first comment from the driver is that it should be better to throw the part in the bin," laughs Leitner. "But it's a good combination that has grown over the past year."

"Dani is a very experienced MotoGP rider. He not only looks at the lap time, but what needs to be changed for the race distance. Due to his height, he only ever had a certain amount of strength for the race. In this aspect he is really, very good."

racing teams can concentrate on the race weekend

Especially in the first two years of the MotoGP project, the racing team was almost like a test team, as new parts were constantly being tried out. Since Pedrosa joined as a test driver in 2019, the division of tasks has become clearer and the racing teams have been relieved.

Since KTM is no longer a "Concession Team", the testing of parts will also decrease over the course of a race weekend. This can have positive aspects if the drivers and engineers can concentrate solely on getting the most out of them.

"It will bring some calm, because what we did in the first four years can hardly be expected of the team," said Beirer. "The drivers will also be able to concentrate more on driving and less on development. That will be good for the race result."

"It will also be good for the technicians that they can test the parts in peace. When the new motorcycle arrives in November, it will be ready. We are already enjoying it when we get to the same rhythm as our colleagues . "

Tech 3 team boss Poncharal convinced: "A satellite team can win the World Championship" .

If you look at the MotoGP era since 2002, then you could Satellite teams keep celebrating respectable successes. For example, Sete Gibernau challenged Valentino Rossi (Repsol-Honda) with the Gresini-Honda in 2003/04.
