Massa casts doubt over 2018 chances for Di Resta-Kubica

Massa casts doubt over 2018 chances for Di Resta-Kubica Felipe Massa has cast doubt over Paul di Resta and Robert Kubica, who are in contention to possibly takeover the Brazilian’s seat for 2018. Recently, di Resta and Kubica took part in a one-day test in Hungary with the FW36, both drivers were through their paces as the team attempt to decide on their future driver line-up. Massa believes Kubica could struggle at some races in the season, as he continues to rehabilitate himself with Formula 1 machinery, however, he does respect what the Polish driver is attempting to achieve “I have no idea how he’s driving, first of all,” he told Motorsport.com. “To be honest, I cannot do what he’s doing, driving with only one hand. It’s impossible for me to believe that he will not suffer with some of the races with this car that we’re driving that is a lot more difficult physically. “I really respect what he’s doing, and what he’s doing is just amazing. But it’s impossible to believe that he will not have some issues.” He also spoke about his concerns over di Resta, who drove in place of the 36-year old at the Hungarian Grand Prix after falling ill, believing the former Force India driver doesn’t have what it takes to deliver for team in numerous areas. Despite the ongoing discussions with the Grove-based team, the 11-time grand prix winner acknowledges there is nothing more he can prove to the team to sway its decision. “I don’t believe he’s the right driver for the team, to develop the car and show the results and everything,” added Massa.

Felipe Massa has said that he would “like to accept a new challenge” for 2018, after announcing that he retiring from Formula 1 at the end of the season.

The Brazilian was set to retire at the end of 2016 but was recalled by Williams when they had a sudden vacancy after Valtteri Bottas was signed to replace the then-reigning world champion Nico Rosberg at Mercedes due to his shock retirement.

Massa has partnered Lance Stroll for the 2017 campaign and has scored 36 points, four less than his young team-mate.

When breaking the news of his retirement, Massa had admitted that he would have liked to have continued with the team, but Williams has been in no hurry to make its decision regarding next year’s driver line-up, prompting him to call time on his F1 career once again.

Massa announces retirement at the end of 2017 Felipe Massa has announced he is retiring from Formula 1 for a second time at the end of the season. The 36-year-old departed at end of 2016, however, Williams tempted him back into the cockpit after Valtteri Bottas was drafted in at Mercedes after Nico Rosberg unexpectedly announced his own retirement after winning the world championship. Paired with Lance Stroll for 2017, the Brazilian driver had led the teenager all season but now finds himself behind his team-mate in the points standings for the first time this year, despite having a successful start to the season. Massa said: “As everyone knows, after announcing my retirement from Formula One last year, I agreed to return this season to help Williams when the call came. I have now enjoyed four great years with the team, but my career in Formula One will finally come to an end this season. “I take so many great memories with me as I prepare for my final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, and although they will be emotional, I am looking forward to ending on a high note and preparing for a new chapter in my career.” Massa has won 11 races, 41 podiums 16 pole positions so far and fought against Lewis Hamilton in a hotly contested 2008 world championship, which saw both drivers take the battle right to the very end of the season in dramatic fashion. Deputy team principal Claire Williams added: “I would like to thank Felipe for all he has done for the team over the last four years.

“Part of me wanted to carry on because I think I’m still competitive enough to race a top-line Formula 1 car, and also because I feel very good at Williams,” Massa said in his column for Motorsport.com.

“But every story has to come to an end at some point, and on my part, I have no regrets.

“Exactly a year ago I lived the same situation, and then suddenly the team asked me to come back.

“For me, it was a real privilege to do so and something I appreciated a lot, and a year later I am ready to follow a different path – happy with what I have done and what we have achieved this season.”

“There are those who will be curious to know where I will be racing next year, but it is too early to declare now,” said Massa.
