Celtic and Rangers to battle for Dundee defender in January

Celtic and Rangers to battle for Dundee defender in January Celtic and Rangers will battle for the signature of Dundee defender Jack Hendry in January. The Derry Journal, who cite Football Insider, claim that both teams are keen to sign the youngster. Hendry has impressed in games against both Celtic and Rangers already this season, leaving them considering a move for the player. The defender came through the ranks at Partick Thistle but despite his tender age, has been on the move a lot throughout his career. He has spent time at Wigan, Shrewsbury and MK Dons before moving back to Scotland in the summer, signing a two-year deal with Dundee. Hendry has been ever-present for Dundee in the Scottish Premiership this season. Celtic are currently seven points clear at the top of the league but have been linked with several January moves as they look to build on another strong start to their campaign.

Celtic are one of the teams interested in signing Dundee defender Jack Hendry, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has been mightily impressive for Neil McCann’s side this season and is reportedly a target for a few English Premier League sides, as well at the Hoops.

Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Southampton are all apparently keeping tabs on his progress as well, so if Celtic do want to sign him, they might face a bit of a battle to get him.

Hendry joined Dundee from Wigan Athletic in but only did so on a short-team deal, one that now only has has 18 months left to run. Whilst Dundee would not want to let the player go, they are reportedly set to have a meeting this week to decide whether or not to cash in on him now to boost their extremely limited funds.

Celtic close in on deal to sign Dundee's Jack Hendry

Celtic close in on deal to sign Dundee's Jack Hendry Dundee’s Jack Hendry is close to agreeing a deal that will see him become a Celtic player, although he is likely to be loaned back to his current club until the end of the season. According to Neil Cameron of The Herald, the 22-year-old could become one of three players to agree moves to Celtic before the window has even opened as the Scottish champions look to get their business done early. Experienced German defender Marvin Compper will join the first-team squad in January whilst Lewis Morgan and Hendry look like they’ll sign for Brendan Rodgers’ side, but they won’t join their new club until the summer as the decision seems to have been made to let them continue getting regular football at their current sides. Hendry, dubbed by some as the next John Stones, impressed Rodgers when Celtic played Dundee earlier in the season and it appears that the Celtic boss has decided that he’s good enough to warrant a place in his squad from the start of next season.

Back in October, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers will quick to praise the defender, dubbed “the next John Stones” after he performed well when his side faced Dundee.

He said:

“The boy Hendry at the back I thought was excellent. He’s quick and strong and is a good size. Scotland need centre halves and that looks like a good kid. He’s tall, he can run and he can pass. He looks a talent.”

Celtic look set to add reinforcements to their back line in January and Hendry could be one of the men they look to bring in to help them look to secure another league win, as well as make an impact in the Europa League.

Celtic confirm signing of Marvin Compper .
Celtic have officially announced that Marvin Compper will join the club on January 1st, 2018, after they agreed a deal to sign him from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. The 32-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract that will run until the summer of 2020, but he can’t officially join up with his new teammates, with whom he’ll travel to Dubai for winter training, until the transfer window opens. One point to note is that the German will not be ineligible to play in the Europa League for Celtic as he featured in Leipzig’s final Champions League group game and as they too dropped into Europa League, he will be cup-tied. Speaking about the move to Celtic TV, Compper said: “The last year I wasn’t playing at Leipzig so I was on the market. Celtic’s recruiting staff were looking for an experienced defender who could play their style so they found me. The made contact with my agent and it only took two or three weeks to wrap it up. I am very glad to be here.” After the retirement of Kolo Toure, Brendan Rodgers was keen to add an older defender to his squad, but he wanted somebody who was comfortable on the ball and in Compper, it looks like he’s found just that.
