MLB free agents 2017-18: Updated slowly developing markets for SN's top 10 free agents Where will a trio of ex-Royals land? Which team will bolster its starting pitching by adding Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta? Here at Sporting News, we put together our list of the top 101 free agents shortly after the World Series ended, and not a single one of those original top 10 players have actually signed a deal yet (at the time, Shohei Ohtani wasn’t a lock to jump to MLB for 2018, so he wasn’t included). That’s kind of hard to believe, considering Christmas is only a couple days away.

The Royals are not going to let Eric Hosmer go quietly into that good night. According to USA Today Sports, Kansas City has offered its All-Star first baseman a seven-year, $147 million deal to retain his services.

Kansas City joins the Padres as teams willing to give Hosmer a seven-year contract worth at least $140 million, but it is unclear what the particulars are on the breakdown of the contracts.

St. Louis has also gotten in on the Hosmer sweepstakes this week, as USA Today reported Tuesday.

While the Royals are offering more money than the Padres that may not matter as much in the long run. Hosmer is looking for more years — eight or nine, according to USA Today — rather than more money.

The Royals still have two more free agents beyond Hosmer to deal with as well. Center fielder Lorenzo Cain and third baseman Mike Moustakas are still on the market.

MLB free agents: J.D. Martinez's reported contract demands are well above his worth .
Though J.D. Martinez generated exemplary walk-year production in 2017, his mega deal eludes him — even with spring training less than five weeks away. Martinez has the right man behind him in Scott Boras, but even the super-agent seems to be having a difficult time persuading clubs that it’s wise to heavily invest in a player destined to be — or at least should be — a full-time designated hitter. Boras does not sweat securing significant deals when facing a dwindling timeframe because he has experienced immense success in similar circumstances with numerous high-level free agents.
