Arsene Wenger denied Arsenal are close to welcoming another new face to the Emirates Stadium, with the Premier League side reportedly keen on a move for West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans.

Evans, a long-term reported Arsenal target, continues to be linked with leaving West Brom, who have not won in the Premier League since August.

Arsenal have already bolstered their defensive options in the January transfer window by bringing in Greek centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos from PAS Giannina, although Wenger has suggested the 20-year-old could be sent out on loan.

And Wenger, whose side were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest on Sunday, claims Arsenal are not closing in on Evans.

"No, I cannot give you any news on any transfer because we are not close to signing anybody," the Frenchman said in his post-match press conference.

"We signed a Greek boy [Mavropanos] who looks quite good in training but apart from that, we have not done anything.

"Will we be out there to do something? Yes we will."

Wenger had to watch from the stands due a three-match touchline ban as holders Arsenal were dumped out of the FA Cup in the third round for the first time in his 22-year reign.

But the 68-year-old denied his absence from the dugout was a factor as managerless Forest completed a famous 4-2 victory at the City Ground.

No bids yet for Evans says Pardew

No bids yet for Evans says Pardew Alan Pardew says that West Brom have yet to receive an official offer for Jonny Evans. The Albion club captain has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months including Everton, Arsenal and former club Manchester United, and he was heavily linked with Manchester City last summer. The Northern Ireland international has just 18 months left on his current deal at the Hawthorns, and although the club haven’t received an offer yet, Pardew has admitted that the club have made plans for life without Evans. When asked whether West Brom would retain Evans, Pardew said; “It is very much about the bid coming first because there is so much speculation.” “We need to see a bid and we haven’t seen a bid so all I can report is the facts. We haven’t received a bid so Jonny stays here.” Pardew also revealed that the club would have “no problem” with offering a new deal to Evans, but that he would not be involved in potential financial negotiations. He added; “We would give Jonny a new deal – there is no problem about that. I think he is very much aware of that.” “I think it is about the player and the club coming to an agreement. I don’t do that side of the finance but of course we want to keep our best players.” West Brom will need to keep Evans for as long as possible if they are to remain in the Premier League for next season. They are currently on a 20-game winless run in the Premier League, while languishing in 19th place in the league table.

The Gunners boss is keen to make moves in the January transfer window, but has not made an approach for the former Man Utd centre-half.

"No, I wouldn't say that," said Wenger, whose seven titles make him the FA Cup's most successful manager.

"I just think that we were not good enough anywhere, not at the front and not in the middle or at the back.

"We paid for it and they looked sharper, had more chances and that's all I can say. Nottingham Forest had an outstanding performance today. We couldn't fault any individual performance from Forest today.

"It hurts very much. We've won the FA Cup three times in the last four years. On the other end, we don't win the FA Cup every year. It's a difficult competition to win. Of course it hurts very much to go out in the third round."

On having to watch the game from the City Ground's directors box, Wenger added: "Bad. I hate it."

West Brom's move for Mitrovic depends on Evans' future .
According to Sky Sports, West Brom’s pursuit of Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic depends on whether or not they sell Jonny Evans this month. The Baggies have been linked with Serbia international Mitrovic for some weeks now but no move has materialised just yet. The former Anderlecht man is keen to leave Newcastle as he goes in search of regular first-team game time. However, West Brom are currently in a precarious financial position and will need to raise funds before they press ahead with their plans to land Mitrovic, if Sky Sports are to be believed. Evans has been touted with moves to many big clubs in recent times. Manchester City and Arsenal have been heavily linked with the Northern Ireland international in the last couple of transfer windows and both clubs remain without depth in central defence. Alan Pardew wants to keep Evans at the club but faces a dilemma, with the Baggies boss also keen to bolster his West Brom squad.
