The Calgary Flames extended their hot streak to five with a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.

The Lightning, top of the Atlantic Division with a 31-10-3 record, could only muster a single goal in the encounter through Brayden Point at 0:31 in the second.

Point's 17th of the season drew the game level at 1-1 after Michael Ferland scored after 0:29 in the first, and Calgary followed up with two late in the second through Johnny Gaudreau and Sam Bennett and a further two in the third.

The Washington Capitals had not tasted defeat at home since November 30 when they went down to the LA Kings, but were outdone by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Goals from Jordan Staal, Victor Rask and Sebastian Aho helped Carolina to a 3-1 win, while the Buffalo Sabres beat the Columbus Blue Jackets by the same scoreline.

Jack Eichel sealed the win with an empty net goal - and his 18th of the season - with six seconds left to play.
