Lopez set for FE return as Jani splits with Dragon

Lopez set for FE return as Jani splits with Dragon Jose Maria Lopez is set to return to Formula E after Neel Jani split with Dragon Racing after just one weekend. Lopez made his debut with Virgin Racing last year but was axed in favour of Alex Lynn after just one season, which included two podiums. The opportunity to return to FE arose when Jani and Dragon decided to part company after a nightmare start to the season. Jani was lapped and finished down in 18th place in both races. His team-mate Jerome d’Ambrosio also failed to score. This left Dragon as the only team to walk away from Hong Kong empty-handed. The team split with its technical partner Faraday Future prior to the season opener. It was allegedly going to receive Porsche backing with Jani, a Porsche LMP1 driver, and multiple engineers on board from the German manufacturer, however, this deal fell through. Following Porsche’s LMP1 exit, Jani will race with privateers Rebellion in WEC’s ‘super-season’ which begins at Spa in May. Lopez is also expected to remain in LMP1 with sole manufacturers Toyota. It’s unknown whether Lopez will contest next weekend’s Marrakesh FE round as a one-off or the first of a full-time seat.

Felix Rosenqvist drove a masterfully tactical race to hunt down Sebastien Buemi to take victory in the Marrakesh ePrix and the Formula E championship

Mahindra’s Felix Rosenqvist beat Sebastien Buemi on track to take victory in Marrakesh in the third race of the Formula E season.

Rosenqvist started third behind pole-sitter Buemi and DS Virgin’s Sam Bird, but was able to make a textbook pass on Buemi going into Turn 7 in the final five laps of the race.

The Swedish driver was able to get around Bird in the first stint, but both drivers lost some time in the pits to season two drivers’ champion Buemi. Second place for Buemi will be a relief after he picked up just one point from the Hong Kong double-header in December.

His rival for the last few years and defending FE drivers’ champion Lucas di Grassi wasn’t able to find the luck he needed to give his campaign a needed boost. After not scoring any points in Hong Kong, the Brazilian retired from the race during the first stint after problems with his car put him a lap down to the leaders.

Jaguar announce lineup for Marrakesh FE rookie test Former Formula 1 driver Paul di Resta and 2017 Formula V8 3.5 champion Pietro Fittipaldi will drive Jaguar’s Formula E car at the rookie test in Marrakesh. The test is set to take place on Jan 14, the day after the Marrakesh ePrix, and is limited to drivers who don’t have an e-license Di Resta, who filled in for Felipe Massa at Williams for the Hungarian Grand Prix this year, will travel to Morocco after testing for the Daytona 24 Hours in Florida, USA. “It is a perfect opportunity, at the right time of year to have a go,” Di Resta said. “It will be an intensive day of testing in Marrakech but I’m sure I can give some positive feedback to the team.” The chance for Fittipaldi comes after his successful season in Formula V8 3.5, where he took six wins and won the championship ahead of Matevos Isaakyan. Fittipaldi says that he has taken an interest to FE since the series first tested at Donington, saying, “I am really looking forward to driving the car and with Jaguar’s heritage in racing it is a very special privilege.

Felix Rosenqvist jumped into the lead of the Formula E points by beating Sebastien Buemi in a straight fight in Marrakech . He eased clear to take a comfortable victory with Buemi second and erstwhile championship leader Bird a distant third as he struggled with a gearbox problem.

Many drivers that started further back on the grid for the race were able to take advantages of incidents on track to salvage a good performance. Jean-Eric Vergne was able to finish in fifth behind Nelson Piquet Jr after qualifying 13th on the grid.

Vergne wasn’t as prolific on track compared to others, but was able to make his way up the order through retirements and other incidents on track.

The first involved Daniel Abt hitting Alex Lynn going into the first turn on the second lap of the 33 lap race. Lynn dropped down to 19th by the time he got going again, while later in the race Abt was given a drive-through penalty. Neither Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler drivers scored points in Marrakesh.

Joel Eriksson gets chance to drive FE car in Marrakesh

Joel Eriksson gets chance to drive FE car in Marrakesh 2017 Formula 3 European Championship runner-up Joel Eriksson will get a chance to drive for DS Virgin Racing at Formula E’s rookie test in Marrakesh. The Swede was only bested in the junior championship by Lando Norris, picking up seven wins last season. He has recently joined BMW in DTM for next season. He will drive the car that Sam Bird used to win in Hong Kong last month to kick off the 2017/18 season. “Formula E has a wealth of very talented drivers so it’s great to be experiencing this first hand and getting my first taste of electric racing,” said Eriksson. “DS Virgin Racing are a proven race-winning team so I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel.” He joins F3 rival Maximilian Gunther, who finished five points behind him in third, at the rookie test. Gunther will be with Dragon Racing who has recently parted ways with Neel Jani after just one race weekend. Former DS Virgin Racing driver in 2016/17 Jose Maria Lopez is thought to be the one to replace Jani at Dragon for the Marrakesh ePrix on January 13.

Oliver Turvey, who started from the pit lane after an issue came up with his car before the race, was able to make his way into the points during the first stint. The Brit however didn’t return to the track after his pit-stop.

In his first race back in FE after being dropped by DS Virgin before the start of the season, Jose Maria Lopez was able to take home sixth. While the Dragon Racing driver qualified fourth it was a much better result than what the team had in Hong Kong.

His team-mate Andre Lotterer didn’t have a positive performance however. Lotterer was running in the bottom half of the grid before he went off the track and couldn’t get the car started again. The incident brought out the full course yellow while the likes of Mitch Evans, Antonio Felix da Costa and Daniel Abt were still in the pits. Evans was running in the points before pitting but had to settle for 13th.

Maro Engel finished ahead of Nick Heidfeld for seventh, while Tom Blomqvist in his first FE race for the Andretti team was able to score points in ninth.

Buemi’s team-mate Nico Prost rounded off the top ten, while Lynn and Abt, who were involved in the second lap incident, were 11th and 12th respectively.
