KISSIMMEE, Fla.Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos found spring training insurance behind the plate in the form of Chris Stewart on Wednesday, signing the veteran catcher to a one-year, major-league deal. Stewart’s contract is non-guaranteed, though the team is interested in keeping him within the organization if he does not make the Opening Day 25-man roster.

The Braves moved reliever Grant Dayton, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, to the 60-day disabled list to clear space for Stewart on the 40-man roster.

“If something were to happen, you always need depth,” Anthopoulos said. “We’ll see how he looks in camp and we’ll obviously have to make a decision at the end of camp on him. Want to be clear it doesn’t change anything with Flowers and Suzuki.

Bizarre day: Braves P Mike Foltynewicz loses arbitration, welcomes new son The Braves right-hander lost his arbitration case with the Braves Saturday, but had much bigger news in his life as he welcomed a new son.The right-hander had sought $2.3 million, but the Braves' offer of $2.2 million prevailed, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That virtually amounts to a rounding error in a multi-million contract.

The Braves have reached agreement with catcher Chris Stewart on a one-year deal , according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (via Twitter). It’s a non - guaranteed MLB contract, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution adds on Twitter, which could pay Stewart 5K

“This is a depth move, an insurance move.”

Anthopoulos stressed that Flowers, in particular, is not behind schedule after undergoing surgery on his left wrist and lower left arm.

Stewart, who will turn 36 on Feb. 19, is a journeyman catcher with six different MLB uniforms in his rearview mirror, spending the past four seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He owns a .230/.298/.293 career slash line, though Atlanta is more intrigued with his defensive aptitude.

“We like that he can frame and receive and makeup, clubhouse … especially with all these arms in camp,” Anthopoulos said. “If things don’t work out and he doesn’t make the team, hopefully he’ll want to stay.”

If Stewart did stay in the organization, the team believes he would be an asset at Triple-A Gwinnett for young arms like Kolby Allard, Mike Soroka and Touki Toussaint.

“In a perfect deal this would have been a minor-league deal. He wasn’t coming on a minor-league deal,” Anthopoulos said. “This is what it took to get him to come here. Grant Dayton got moved to the 60-day DL; we had a spot on the 40. This is what it took to get him. It’s not a clean fit right now. We’ll see in the next six weeks how things develop. If there’s no spot for him at the end of six weeks, then hopefully he’ll want to stay with us in some capacity.”
