Despite not making an appearance for the Spanish national team since the 2016 Euro’s it is not deterring Cesc Fabregas from fighting for a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Following Vicente Del Bosque’s departure the Chelsea midfielder has been out of favour for new coach Julen Lopetegui.

The 30-year-old is the 8th most capped player Spanish international, with his first World Cup appearance coming at the ripe young age of 18 back in 2006.

Whilst it has been an illustrious international career winning three major titles, which included a World Cup in 2010 where he claimed the assist for Andres Iniesta’s late winning goal.

Spain have announced a star-studded World Cup squad ahead of Russia this summer. Head coach Julen Lopetegui named his 23-man squad on Monday with Chelsea' s Alvaro Morata the headline name to miss out alongside Blues teammates Cesc Fabregas , Pedro and Marcos Alonso.

Fabregas helped Spain defend their national crown by winning the Euros in 2012 and still feels he will be a valuable squad member for the upcoming world cup despite being left in International limbo.

“I am not a player who throws the towel. I have a small hope, in some way, but I know it is hard [to get called up for the World Cup],” he told Goal. “I haven’t received any calls or been included in any team list for all this time.

“Anyway, I don’t think about it because I keep my focus on performing here [at Chelsea], but maybe it wouldn’t be strange to call someone who first came into the team 15 years ago. It is obvious that they already know me but it would be nice to get in.

“I am focusing now on my club because, in the end, if you don’t do right things in your club, it is impossible to receive the call. And if it finally arrives, perfect. If not, I will support the team from home.”

Fabregas faces strong competition against experienced squad members such as Thiago Alcantara, Andres Iniesta and the inform David Silva as well as promising youngsters such as Saul and Asier Illarramendi.
