Liverpool confident about £40m Butland deal

Liverpool confident about £40m Butland deal Liverpool are reportedly confident that they will secure the services of Jack Butland this summer. The Mirror report that Liverpool are closing in on a £40 million deal with Jurgen Klopp thought to be the deciding factor in the player’s mind. The Stoke City goalkeeper has been heavily linked with a move to both Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, but the player has his heart set on an Anfield switch. Working alongside Klopp is reportedly something that interests Butland, something that helped the Reds beat Manchester City to the signature of Virgil van Dijk too. A £40 million deal would see Butland become the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, surpassing the £37 million that Manchester City spent on Ederson last summer. Loris Karius has impressed since becoming Liverpool’s number one, but Klopp is still expected to look for a new number one this summer. Roma’s Allison has also been linked with a switch to Anfield, but the Brazilian is also attracting interest from Chelsea and Manchester United.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation has been a hot topic this season, with Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius alternating for most of the campaign, until recentlyas Jurgen Klopp has stuck with Karius, who has stepped up in recent weeks.

However, with Mignolet not wanting to stay at Anfield and be second choice to the 24-year-old, it is believed that Klopp will be aiming to try and sign a goalkeeper for next season, one worthy of challenging Karius.

Karius has been first choice goalkeeper and has played every league and Champions League game since the magnificent 4-3 win over Manchester City, of which the Reds have only lost twice out of 11, against Swansea City and Manchester United.

He has also made crucial saves in recent vital wins against West Ham United and Newcastle United, such as the save from Marko Arnautovic’s attempted chip and Mohamed Diame’s magnificent shot.

Liverpool remain third in the Premier League and in the hat for the quarter final draw of the Champions League, with Karius being an influential part of those achievements.

Whether Liverpool decide to go for a new ‘keeper remains to be seen but if they do, they won’t be going after Butland.

Matip reveals what he needs to do to improve .
Joel Matip feels that he needs to be contributing more on the goalscoring front for Liverpool, something that he aims to improve for next season. The Cameroon international has been competing with Dejan Lovren for a place in the starting 11 alongside record signing Virgil van Dijk this season. Matip has made 21 Premier League appearances in the current campaign, including their previous match, a 5-0 victory over Watford, which came with a sixth clean sheet in the previous nine games. The 26-year-old has scored one goal this season, and that is where the problem lies for Matip. Although being a defender, and having the duty to keep the goals out, he believes he should be contributing to the team down at the other end more often. Speaking to the club’s official website, Matip said; “I hope that a few more will follow as I am not happy with my goal return.” “I am a defender, I know, but I think to myself that I could score more goals for Liverpool than I already did.” “Maybe sometimes I need a little bit of luck, maybe sometimes I have to do something different when I go forward. I’m not desperate about it. I’m still positive and I hope my next goal is not too far away.” This isn’t such an unrealistic goal for the former Schalke defender, as he notched 23 times in all competitions for the Gelsenkirchen club, and has been reduced to just the two in his Liverpool career.
