Jose Mourinho says there will be no place in Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final starting line-up for the players who disappointed in the 1-0 loss to West Brom.

United suffered a shock defeat at home to the Premier League's bottom club on Sunday to gift the title to Manchester City.

Mourinho's men produced one of their most insipid displays of the season at a rainy Old Trafford, just a week on from their remarkable come-from-behind win away to City, and are now under pressure to consolidate second place in the table ahead of Liverpool and Tottenham.

Mourinho explains why Pogba was substituted against West Brom

Mourinho explains why Pogba was substituted against West Brom Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has explained why he made the decision to take Paul Pogba off in the team’s 1-0 defeat against West Brom. The Red Devils succumbed to a disappointing loss against the Baggies at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as a late Jay Rodriguez goal sealed a win for the visitors. United were not at their best and Mourinho made numerous alterations to his side throughout the match, including the withdrawal of Pogba. The Frenchman turned in a sublime second-half performance against Manchester City last week, in which he found the net on two occasions. Against West Brom, however, he could not replicate the same level. Mourinho decided to substitute Pogba and replace him with Anthony Martial in the second-half. The United boss explained the thinking behind his decision and implied that he felt Pogba was over-complicating things when in possession. As quoted by the Daily Star, the United manager addressed why he made the bold move against West Brom. “Paul’s game was complicated like many others, always one more touch, one more turn. In the first half I felt I had to bring one player with more dynamic and a player that runs more and has more touches of the ball.” “I had to make a decision one midfield player out to bring in Jesse Lingard and then after that I wanted more width, and Paul had a yellow card and before that he had a situation not for a second yellow but you never know in football the way the referees react to that, so I reacted to that.

United visit Bournemouth on Wednesday before taking on Spurs at Wembley three days later, aiming to keep alive their last hopes for a trophy this season.

Mourinho plans to make changes at the Vitality Stadium in order to give certain players the chance to impress, while the worst performers against West Brom have already ruined their chances of starting against Spurs.

"Rotating is not the right word," he said. "If I play a player against Bournemouth, and the player is phenomenal, he plays the semi-final.

"So, the word is not rotation. It is an opportunity for some to play and try to get a place in the team for Spurs. Some of the guys that played today, they don't have a place in that team.

"What is the criteria for a manager to choose a team? I only know one criteria: it's the way you play. It's the only way I can select players.

Mata turns focus to FA Cup after miserable West Brom defeat

Mata turns focus to FA Cup after miserable West Brom defeat Although he admits any post-West Brom excuses "sound like hollow words", Juan Mata is rallying support for a key week for Manchester United.A disappointed Juan Mata says Manchester United must shift their focus to a crucial week in their season following their 1-0 loss to West Brom on Sunday.

"Do you want me to go for the price they cost, their salary, their beautiful face? The only way is to go with performance."

There were few positive performers for United against the Baggies but much of the post-match scrutiny was once again on Paul Pogba.

The midfielder, who inspired the 3-2 win at City with two goals, put in a woeful display on Sunday and was taken off on 58 minutes having been booked for a deliberate handball when trying to score in the first half.

Mourinho said the risk of a red card was partly why Pogba was replaced but stressed the France international was no worse than some of the players who played the full match.

"It was not just him, and he had a yellow card, so he was in a more difficult position than others," Mourinho said. "Playing with two midfielders, you cannot play with one player at risk of not being able to make a foul.

"You can do it if your team is not losing the ball, but our team was losing the ball so easy, with the complication. Everything was complicated, so we were losing lots of balls. By losing lots of balls with turnings, flicks and tricks, the midfield players and central defenders are at risk: one late challenge, and they are out.

"So, Paul was out because of the yellow card. In terms of the way he played, he was not worse than some others who were on the pitch for 90 minutes."

Pogba plays down fears over his relationship with Jose Mourinho .
Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has once again talked up his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho. Speaking on French TV show Canal Football, as reported by the Daily Mail, Pogba was adamant there is no problem between the pair. “I do not have any problem with Mourinho, I do not think he’s either. He’s [Mourinho] the coach, he’s going to make choices and I as a player, I accept him. That is all.” The French midfielder has seen questions raised about his future at Manchester United throughout the season and his relationship with Mourinho. Reports have claimed that the pair had fallen out on various occasions, leading to claims that Mourinho will sell the player this summer. Despite impressing in the FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham, the former Juventus midfielder has struggled for consistency this season. Pogba was dropped from the first-team squad earlier this season, raising more concerns about the player’s future at Old Trafford. Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the midfielder throughout the season.
